Demarest, Goodall Shine as No. 7 Eagles Sweep Two-Team Doubleheader

| By:
Dylan Demarest allowed one run on four hits in 5.2 innings
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Led by right-handers Brian Johnson (3-0) and Dylan Demarest (1-1), the seventh-ranked Embry-Riddle baseball team swept its two-team doubleheader, defeating Bethel (Tenn.) 7-1 in game one and then taking down Aquinas 5-1.

The Eagles improved to 16-3 with the two victories while the Wildcats fell to 11-7, after losing to Aquinas 8-0 earlier in the day. The Saints moved to 4-3 after splitting their doubleheader on Thursday.

Game 1

The Eagles wasted no time backing Brian Johnson in the first game against the Wildcats. After a quick 1-2-3 inning by Johnson, B., the ERAU offense got off to a fast start as Jordan Johnson walked and then scored as Jeff Lemon reached base on a throwing error by Martin Key.

Johnson escaped jams in the second and third innings, inducing an inning-ending double play in the second and a groundout in the third to escape a first and third, one-out situation.

The Blue and Gold used a four-run third to break the game wide open. Tyler Robbins got the inning started with a one-out hit-by-pitch, then promptly stole second. He came around to score as Johnson, J. singled to second and advanced one base on a throwing error by the second baseman. Lemon made it first and third with a single off the pitcher, setting up Kevin Lindheim's sacrifice fly to center. Kyle Chastain tripled to right center to score Lemon and scored as the centerfielder's throw to third sailed into the Eagles dugout, making the score 4-0.

Johnson, B. pitched a scoreless fourth, before being relieved by Benjamin-Antwan Brown who didn't allow a baserunner until the seventh.

Embry-Riddle's offense added two insurance runs in the sixth as Adam Cellini drove home Chastain with an RBI single to left and his courtesy runner, Connor Williams, came around to score on a throwing error by the second baseman.

It looked as though ERAU would get the shutout, however, the Wildcats used a single and three consecutive walks to push a run across in the seventh, but it was too little too late as the Eagles got the win, 7-1.

Johnson, B. got his third win of the season, tossing four scoreless innings, allowing one hit, striking out two and walking one. Benjamin-Antwan Brown recorded his first save of 2013, throwing three innings, allowing one run on one hit, striking out one and walking three.

Chastain paced the Eagles' offense going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Game 2

Dylan Demarest was the surprise of the day as he got the ball for his first start and was superb, not allowing a hit until the fourth inning.

Demarest's counterpart fell on bad luck as Aquinas starter Kaleb Ort left the game after a perfect first inning with an apparent arm injury. His replacement, Kyle Kranz, pitched admirably in relief, but the Eagles jumped all over him in the second inning.

Lindheim singled to lead off the second inning and Chastain followed with a walk while Matt Jacobs singled on a bunt, loading the bases for Liam Goodall. Goodall delivered his first of three hits, scoring Lindheim on an infield single. Cellini added two more tallies with a double down the right field line, scoring Jacobs and Chastain. With two outs, Johnson, J. singled up the middle, scoring Goodall and increasing the lead to four, 4-0.

Kranz settled in, allowing just two hits the rest of the way. However, one of those hits was an inside-the-park home run by Goodall which was a sinking line drive in the gap that was overrun by the Wildcats centerfielder and rolled to the fence before Kyle Orlowski, the leftfielder, could reach the ball, giving the Blue and Gold a 5-0 lead.

Demarest faced just one over the minimum through five innings, the only blemish being a double in the fifth, but couldn't escape the sixth, as two singles, two walks and a Nick Kissane sacrifice fly scored one run and loaded the bases, ending the night for the redshirt freshman.

Eric Green was called on to end the threat, forcing Austin King to pop out to first to end the inning. With the help of a double play, Green sat the Saints down in order in the seventh to end the game and earn his third save of the season.

Demarest pitched 5.2 innings of four-hit baseball, allowing one run, two walks and striking out six. Goodall finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Cellini went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
