DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Embry-Riddle split an afternoon doubleheader with St. Thomas on Sunday, run-ruling the Bobcats in the first game, 14-3 before rain ended the series finale in STU's favor, 2-1 after just five and a half frames. The Eagles (34-12, 17-4) claimed the three-game series with two wins, moving three games in front of the Bobcats (31-15, 17-7) in the loss column in The Sun Conference standings. The Blue and Gold travel to Babson Park to take on Webber International in a three-game league series Apr. 19-20 with Friday's first pitch slated for 7 p.m.
Game 1
In game one, the Eagles scored a season-high 14 runs on 10 hits, eventually coming away with a run-rule shortened, 14-3 victory to claim the series win.
Chad Modomo pitched well enough to earn his fifth win of the 2013 season while the Eagles chased Bobcat starter Kyle Young in the fourth before blowing the game open in the last of the seventh.
Liam Goodall plated the first run of the day for either team with an RBI groundout in the home-half of the second, bringing in
Connor Williams from third after
Adam Cellini's courtesy runner stole third base.
Modomo got two double plays and picked a St. Thomas runner off in the first three innings, setting up a three-run third frame for his offense.
Jordan Romero began the inning by drawing a four-pitch walking, moving to second when
Kyle Chastain grounded out.
Colt Hankamer also worked a bases on balls before
Jeff Lemon singled through the right side, scoring Romero and moving Hankamer to third.
Kevin Lindheim collected an RBI single to left before Cellini drew the third walk of the frame to load the bases.
Jordan Johnson reached on a fielder's choice, plating Lemon and giving the Eagles a 4-0 lead.
The Bobcats scored all three of their runs in the top of the fourth, getting three straight base hits, followed by an RBI walk to score their first run before Modomo induced his third ground ball double play to retire two runners as STU pushed across a second run. Brandon Canizares singled through the left side to chase in the third St. Thomas run, but Modomo got out of the frame with a groundout from Adam Duarte.
A pair of STU errors in the last of the fourth led to four unearned Eagle runs, including two on Lindheim's double as the Eagles extended their advantage to 8-3.
Modomo delivered a shutdown inning in the fifth and the Eagles sent
Jon Rapose to the mound in the sixth and the junior tossed two innings of hit-less baseball before the Blue and Gold ended the game with a six-run seventh.
Cellini singled in Lindheim to start the rally and Romero, Hankamer and Lemon all collected RBIs in the frame as the game ended when Lemon doubled up the middle to chase in three runs for the 14-3 final.
Modomo tossed five innings, giving up three runs on nine hits while fanning four and Rapose finished with two innings of work of no-hit ball, striking out one.
Lemon and Lindheim combined for seven RBIs on five hits while scoring two runs each, and Cellini was the other Eagle with a multi-hit outing with an RBI on a pair of hits.
Game 2
Heavy rain and lightning forced the umpires to call the day's final game after just five and a half innings with the Bobcats holding a 2-1 lead over the Eagles, ending the Embry-Riddle's hopes of a series sweep.
The Eagles scored first against Bobcat starter Josh Ruiz, plating a run in the bottom of the first when Lemon grounded into a double play with Eagles on the corners, allowing Chastain to score from third, but erasing Hankamer on the play. Chastain doubled to center to begin the frame before moving to third when Hankamer reached first on a wild pitch after he swung and missed at strike three.
The Bobcats took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second with Canizares and Cesar Ramirez bringing in runs against
Stetson Nelson.
The Eagles stranded runners in the second and third, but Ruiz retired nine straight ERAU batters after issuing a walk to Romero to begin the home-half of the third inning, keeping STU in front by a run.
Following a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the sixth, the tarp was pulled and a rain delay ensued until the contest was called after a two-hour stoppage.
Ruiz (1-0) got the win, pitching five innings, allowing just two hits and one run while fanning five. Nelson (6-2) got the loss, surrendering two runs on five hits with seven Ks.
