THOMASVILLE, Ga. - The NAIA No. 6 Embry-Riddle Eagles finished the 2013 regular season on a high note, completing a sweep of the Thomas Night Hawks on Thursday afternoon with a pair of one-run victories, 2-1 and 3-2. Interestingly enough, the Eagles' next opponent will be the University of South Carolina Beaufort in the first game of The Sun Conference Tournament on Apr. 30, a team the Eagles helped by sweeping Thomas, earning the Sand Sharks a berth to the six-team tournament. Embry-Riddle (40-12, 23-4) secured the 15th 40+ win season in program history and the second-best conference mark in the league since 1994. The Night Hawks (23-26, 12-14) end their season after failing to cliinch a bid to The Sun Conference Tournament.
Game One - ERAU 2, TU 1
The Eagles used a pair of Kevins to come away with a 2-1 pitchers' duel in the day's opener.
Kevin Lindheim provided all the offense for the Blue and Gold with a two-run homer in the top of the first while
Kevin Maloney held Thomas to one run on three hits over eight innings to earn his 28th career victory.
Jeff Lemon drew a two-out walk against Kurtis Gens to keep the top of the first inning alive, and Lindheim launched his third round tripper of the season over the wall in left center for an early 2-0 lead.
Maloney worked around a hit and an error in the bottom of the first before breezing through the second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. The Eagles were unable to get anything going against Gens after the first and saw their lead shrink to one-run in the eighth when Thomas put runners on the corners with no outs against Maloney. The senior lefty got a double play for the first two outs, as the run came in to score, but a strikeout ended the frame and sent the Eagles back to the dish.
An unfortunate line out double play ended an Eagle threat in the ninth and the Eagles looked to be in serious danger in the last of the inning when
Eric Green walked the bases full with one out. Green settled in and collected his 11th save of the season by striking out the final two Night Hawk batters, preserving the 2-1 win.
Lindheim was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Lemon and
Adam Cellini were the only other Eagles to record hits.
Maloney (9-1) went eight strong frames, allowing three hits and one unearned run en route to the victory.
Game Two - ERAU 3, TU 2 (11 inn.)
Fittingly, the last game of the regular season went to extra innings as Embry-Riddle needed a late rally to extend the game before
Jordan Romero won the contest with an RBI single in the 11th.
The Night Hawks took their first lead of the series against
Chad Modomo in the home-half of the first, going up 1-0 on a Hugh Russell Lee double, but Modomo ended the inning with a strikeout, moving the game to the second.
Trent Stoker kept stranding Eagles on the bases, including two in the third on a fielder's choice off the bat of Lemon.
An error allowed the second Thomas run to score in the last of the third, and neither team would reach the scoreboard again until the seventh.
Kyle Chastain doubled down the left field line to score
Liam Goodall after he doubled to left center, cutting the deficit to 2-1, but a strikeout and groundout ended the Eagle threat.
Stoker was relieved in the eighth after Embry-Riddle loaded the bases with one out, and Jacob Gainey got a double play ball up the middle that looked like it would end the inning. However, Goodall, the batter, slid in to first and just beat the throw, allowing Lindheim to score and tie the game at 2-2.
Ronnie Lozada, who entered in the eighth for Modomo, stranded two Thomas runners in the ninth and two more in the 10th to keep the game all square at 2-2.
Cellini drew a one-out walk in the top of the 11th and Goodall moved his courtesy runner,
Connor Williams, to second on a groundout. Romero singled in the game-winning run with a shot to left center, plating Williams and pushing the Eagles in front, 3-2.
Jon Rapose earned his first save of the year with a 1-2-3 home-half of the 11th, earning the win for Lozada (2-2).
Chastain was 3-for-6 with an RBI while Romero finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Eagles and Sand Sharks will play on Tuesday, Apr. 30 at 11 a.m. at City of Palms Park in Fort Myers, Fla.
