DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team continued its dominance in The Sun Conference by capturing the program's ninth consecutive conference title on Saturday. The Eagles downed No. 22 Warner 8-1 to bring the title back to Daytona Beach and improved their overall record to 16-2. Ranked second in the nation, the Blue and Gold posted a 7-0 mark in conference play and extended its nine-year conference unbeaten streak to 51-0.
The Eagles got the scoring started when
Kevin Chaouat and
Simon Felix downed Juan Espinel and Diogo Barros 8-2 at No. 3.
Chris Freeman and
Deni Zmak followed with an 8-2 victory over Julian Ramirez and Patrick Frandji, and
David Spennare and
Anthony Grasso teamed up for the first time this season for an 8-3 win over Vitor Schepper and Akharis Sa-ardphanchai to complete the doubles sweep.
Singles play saw Zmak defeat 32nd-ranked Ramirez 6-0, 6-3 at the top spot, but Warner avoided the shutout when Frandji upended Freeman at No. 2 singles. Grasso and Felix each posted 6-2, 6-2 results, with Grasso topping Schepper at the third position and Felix downing Espinel at No. 4. Spennare defeated Barros 6-1, 6-1 on the sixth court and
Miguel Lopez Gomez closed out the Eagle scoring with a 6-2, 6-3 decision against Sa-ardphanchai at No. 5.
The Eagles will return to action at 11 a.m. on Sunday to take on fourth-ranked NCAA II opponent Lynn at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
