OPA-LOCKA, Fla. - A four hour rain delay and a deficit entering the ninth inning didn't deter the eighth-ranked Embry-Riddle baseball team from completing the series sweep of Florida Memorial on Sunday in extra-innings, 7-5. The Eagles (32-10, 15-3) scored twice in the top of the 11th inning before
Eric Green earned his sixth win of the season by shutting down the Lions (8-34, 2-19) in the last of the frame. The Blue and Gold travel to Tampa to take on the NCAA II powerhouse Tampa Spartans on Tuesday, Apr. 9 at 5 p.m.
Chad Modomo took the mound for Embry-Riddle, trying to become the third Eagle starter in the series to earn the victory, but he was only allowed to throw one inning of work as rain delayed the game in the middle of the second. The downpour only lasted about 30 minutes, but the field needed several hours of work to become playable again.
Brian Johnson began the bottom of the second on the bump and the Lions were able to scratch across a run against him to take their first lead of the series at 1-0.
Florida Memorial added on another run in the third while Kevin Perez continued starter Colby Costanzo's no-hitter through the beginning of the fifth inning.
Trailing 2-0, the Eagles scored four runs in the fifth on just one hit to take a 4-2 lead. With the bases loaded Marlon Alonso relieved Perez, issuing a walk to
Colt Hankamer before hitting
Jordan Johnson with a pitch to force two runs in.
Jeff Lemon broke up the no-no with a single up the middle, plating two runs for the 4-2 advantage.
Johnson delivered two shutout frames in the fourth and fifth, giving way to
Jon Rapose in the sixth. Joel Guzman tied the game in the inning with a two-RBI double to right center, but Rapose was able to minimize the damage by getting two groundouts to end the frame.
Neither team could pull ahead until the home-half of the eighth when the Lions got a run on a bases-loaded chopper in front of the plate to go up 5-4.
Down to their final three outs the Eagles needed a run to extend the game and were able to get one when
Kevin Lindheim reached on a fielding error with the bases loaded, scoring
Connor Williams from third and knotting the game at 5-5.
Eric Green, who had entered for Embry-Riddle in the eighth, pushed the game to extras by stranding two Lions in the ninth but neither team could plate the go-ahead run in the 10th.
Hankamer drew a leadoff walk to start the 11th before Johnson bunted him over to second. Lemon was intentionally walked and Lindheim delivered a single to center that allowed Hankamer to slide home and give the Eagles a one-run lead.
Adam Cellini singled to left to add an insurance run when Lemon touched home, bringing the score to 7-5 in favor of the visitors.
Green struck out the first two Lions he faced before issuing a walk, but the senior from DeLand, Fla. ended the game with a ground ball that Hankamer and Romero teamed-up to put away, giving the Eagles the three-game sweep.
Green tossed the final 3.2 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out five batters.
Lindheim and Lemon recorded two RBIs each and both reached the 50-hit mark on the year in the game.
