Eagles Win Three Games on Saturday to Claim 2013 Conference Tournament Crown

| By:
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle baseball team did the near-impossible on Saturday at City of Palms Park in Fort Myers in the final day of the 2013 Sun Conference Tournament; they won three games in eight and a half hours to claim the tournament title for the fifth time in program history. The Eagles (45-13) beat Southeastern (32-26) in the day's opener to advance to the championship games against the University of South Carolina Beaufort where they defeated the Sand Sharks (26-23) twice, 5-0 and 2-1 to come out of the loser's bracket and lay claim to the tournament crown. Embry-Riddle dropped the first game of the six-team tournament back on Tuesday before rattling off five consecutive wins, all elimination games, for the 19th conference title in 20 seasons of league play.

The Eagles will return to Daytona Beach to host one of nine NAIA National Championship Opening Rounds as four teams will travel to Sliwa Stadium May 9-13 with the winner of the pod advancing to the 2013 Avista-NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho.

ERAU 10, SEU 6
The Eagles wasted no time jumping out in front of Southeastern in the morning game, eventually opening up a 9-0 lead before the Fire pushed a run across the plate. The Blue and Gold collected 14 hits and six stolen bases while four Eagle pitchers saw action against SEU.

Jeff Lemon got his first RBI of the day with a single through the right side of the infield to score Kyle Chastain in the top of the first, and Adam Cellini made the score 2-0 with a single late in the frame, plating Lemon after the Eagles loaded the bases.

After a Fire error in the third allowed a run to score, Liam Goodall made the defensive play of the tournament by going up and over the wall in left field to rob Southeastern's Daniel Mims of a home run in the home-half of the third, and the Eagles followed the web gem with a six-run fourth, pulling way out in front of the Fire.

Kevin Lindheim, Cellini, Jordan Romero and Tyler Robbins all recorded RBIs in the inning, with Romero's double driving in a pair of runs.

Brian Johnson was finally touched up for three Fire runs in the last of the fourth, but Dylan Demarest relieved him in the fifth and posted two scoreless innings as the Blue and Gold tacked on a run in the fifth on Johnson's sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 10-3.

Andrew Lytle gave up his first earned runs of his career in the seventh, but was effective in the seventh, giving way to Benjamin-Antwan Brown in the eighth who pitched the final two innings, allowing only one run on one hit.

Chastain finished 3-for-6 with three stolen bases and two runs scored while Lemon went 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored. Cellini and Romero both drove in a pair of runs while Lindheim and Johnson recorded two hits each.

Demarest earned the victory, moving to 2-2 on the year.

ERAU 5, USCB 0
Jon Rapose pitched his best game of the season in the first championship contest, throwing a complete game, nine-inning shutout of the Sand Sharks as the Eagles forced the if-necessary game with a 5-0 win.

USCB got just seven hits off of Rapose, putting a runner at third base just twice in nine frames as Rapose recorded the second shutout of the tournament for the Embry-Riddle pitching staff.

Miles Galvin, the Sand Shark pitcher who held the Blue and Gold scoreless in the first game of the tournament, started for USCB, but the Eagles scored three times against him, chasing him from the game after four innings.

Cellini drove in the first, and only run Rapose needed, with a groundout in the second, and after Goodall doubled in Matt Jacobs, the Eagles led 2-0.

Johnson got an RBI single in the third, pushing Romero across the plate, and he followed that with an RBI walk in the fifth for a 4-0 advantage.

The final Eagle tally of the contest came off the bat of Chastain when the ERAU leadoff man singled to right, scoring Goodall and accounting for the 5-0 final.

Rapose allowed just two base hits over the final five frames, moving to 3-1 with the shutout victory.

Johnson and Goodall both had two hits for the Eagles and Chastain, Johnson, Cellini and Goodall all recorded RBIs.

ERAU 2, USCB 1
Stetson Nelson, Demarest and Brown needed just two runs in the tournament finale to secure the title, holding the Sand Sharks to one unearned run on six hits. Nelson started on short rest, throwing six innings, giving up one unearned run on four hits with one strikeout.

USCB's Matt Graney gave his team a great effort,  allowing just two runs in 6.1 innings, but was tagged with the loss.

Lemon drove in both runs for the Eagles, and in the same fashion, collecting RBI singles with Chastain in scoring position, once in the third and again in the fifth.

Nelson was perfect through three innings, and his offense gave him a lead in the bottom of the third when Chastain singled with one out, stole second and score on Lemon's bloop single to center.

Nelson got a nice double play from his defense to end the fourth and again Lemon singled in Chastain, this time from third after the centerfielder tripled to left center earlier in the inning.

USCB scored its only run of the day when Blake Cilwick reached on an error in the sixth, scoring Ashley Morris from third.

With a one-run lead, the Eagles turned to Demarest in the seventh where the redshirt freshman worked around two singles and got a line out to end the frame.

Brown followed Demarest in the eighth, facing one over the minimum in both the eighth and ninth, but got a groundout from Ryan Doeppel to end the game and give the Eagles the tournament championship.

Nelson moved to 8-2 on the year with the win while Brown earned his second save of the season in two innings of relief.

Chastain went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Lemon finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Nelson, Lemon, Jordan Johnson and Goodall were named to the 10-member All-Tournament Team for their performances over the week in Fort Myers.
