BEREA, Ky. - The NAIA No. 13 Embry-Riddle Eagles got an impressive double-double from senior center
Cesar Pastrana on Saturday afternoon as the Cartagena, Colombia native scored 24 points and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds in a 66-54 victory over NCAA III Berea. Head Coach
Steve Ridder (Berea, 1981) returned to his alma mater and his team won its eighth straight game to start the 2014-15 season, using a 17-6 run to end the game to come away with the victory. The Mountaineers (1-2) were held to 30 percent shooting from the field, as the Eagles dominated the glass (47-26) and forced 12 Berea turnovers, collecting 15 assists on 24 field goals.
Leading by just one at 49-48 with 9:57 on the clock, the Eagles went on an 11-0 run as Pastrana started the streak, followed by a
Joseph Gonzalez layup and two straight
DeForest Carter field goals and capped on a
Dalton Barnes make off one of Carter's game-high eight assists.
Following the Eagles' run to go up 60-48, the hosts battled back to within eight when Richard Parker nailed a trey with 2:22 left, but the Eagles held firm, not allowing Berea to score again, icing it with a Pastrana offensive rebound and putback with 1:19 left for the 66-54 final.
The game started all Embry-Riddle as the visitors led 9-2 early following a pair of Pastrana free throws, and when Pastrana made a layup with 15 minutes left in the first the Eagles enjoyed a 14-4 advantage which quickly ballooned to 13 on a Barnes' triple.
Trailing 19-4 with just under 12 minutes left in the first, the Mountaineers reeled off an 18-0 run to take a 22-19 lead when Aaron Ponder connected on a three-ppinter with 5:04 on the clock. The 18 unanswered points against ERAU marked the largest such streak this season, and finally ended when Pastrana made a free throw at the 4:40 mark.
Daniel Kiesling scored five consecutive points on a pair of free throws and a three to retake a 25-22 lead for the Eagles, but it was short-lived as Parker knotted the contest with a long range make.
Parker put the home team up 30-29 with 36 seconds left with the second of his three treys, but a well executed backdoor cutter by
Jason Powell was rewarded by
Reed Ridder who found the senior who layed in in for a 31-30 halftime lead for the Blue and Gold.
ERAU opened the second half on a 6-0 run thanks to four points from Pastrana and two more from Ridder after the guard registered a steal, but the Mountaineers clawed their way back to tie it up at 41-41 on two free throws from Parker.
London Moore gave BC its last lead of the day at the 10:50 mark (46-45) before the Eagles went on their 11-0 run to secure the win.
Pastrana's 24 points and 18 rebounds were both game-highs and season-highs, with his 18 boards the third-highest rebounding total in program history. Barnes added a double-double of his own with 16 points and 10 rebounds, tying a career-high mark with his double-digit rebounding total. Carter chipped in 10 points and eight assists as the Eagles shot 42 percent from the field and went 15-for-20 from the charity stripe.
Embry-Riddle stays on the road with a Wednesday, Dec. 3 game against Webber International, the first Sun Conference contest of the season for the Eagles. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. in Babson Park, Fla.
