Deni Zmak clinched at No. 1 singles against Flagler

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team rebounded from a tough loss over the weekend to down NCAA II foe Flagler 8-1, Tuesday at Embry-Riddle's Crotty Tennis Complex. Tuesday's match marked the renewal of an old rivalry and was the first meeting between the Eagles and Saints since 2006, the last season the Saints were members of the then-Florida Sun Conference. The Eagles improved its winning streak against the Saints to seven matches and are now 2-1 on the year.
Doubles play saw the top-ranked ERAU duo of
Deni Zmak and
Simon Felix register an 8-2 win over NCAA II No. 42 Jose Martinez and Bruno Padilha at the top spot. On the second court,
Patrick Besch and
Jaime Sanchez-Canamares Rios found themselves trailing Flagler's Inigo Landaluce and Fabio Ferrauti. Down 7-6, the ERAU pair held serve to tie the score, then registered a break and held again to put the Eagles up 2-0 with an 8-6 decision.
The third doubles match was decided by a tiebreaker. In the end, it was the ERAU team of
Luke de Caires and
Miguel Lopez Gomez who rallied to win 9-8 with a 7-2 decision in the tiebreaker, giving the Blue and Gold a 3-0 lead going into doubles play.
The first match off the court in singles was at the fifth position where Lopez Gomez dispatched Gertmann in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Zmak was the next to score a point for the Eagles as the NAIA's top-ranked player bested Martinez 6-3, 6-0 to clinch the team victory.
Three of the remaining four matches were straight-set victories for ERAU as Sanchez-Canamares defeated Landaluce 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, Felix downed Ferrauti 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 and Besch bested Oquendo 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4.
The Saints avoided the shutout with Brant Swtizer's win at the sixth position. The Flagler sophomore was able to hold off de Caires 6-3, 6-4 for Flagler's only point of the afternoon.
Next for the Eagles is a Thursday road trip to Winter Park where they will take on NCAA II ninth–ranked Rollins. Match time is slated for 3:30 p.m.
