MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA Coaches' Preseason Top 25 poll, suffered its first loss of the season, falling 9-0 to NCAA II No. 1 Barry, Sunday at the Buccaneer Tennis Center. The Eagles, who captured the 2013 NAIA national title, move to 1-1 on the year with the loss, while Barry, the 2013 NCAA II national champions, improves to 4-0 overall.

Doubles play saw Ollie Lemaitre and Renato Lombardi top Miguel Lopez Gomez and Luke de Caires 8-4 at No. 3 doubles, while 14th-ranked Fabian Groetsch and Ahmed Triki bested ERAU's top-ranked duo of Deni Zmak and Simon Felix, 8-5. The match at No. 2 doubles was a closely contested affair and in the end it was the Barry team of Romain Costamanga and Leo Vivas that was able to hold off Patrick Besch and Jaime Sanchez-Canamares Rios, 9-8 with a 7-4 edge in the tie-breaker.

Needing just two favorable singles decisions to claim the team victory, Barry notched straight-set wins at the third, fourth and sixth positions as Nico Dreer topped Felix 6-2, 6-1, Vivas downed Besch 6-4, 6-0 and Franco Echenique bested de Caires 6-2, 6-1.

Although the match was decided, the players still on the court continued to battle hard and all three remaining matches went to three sets. Next to them, on court two, Costamanga also dropped his first set against Sanchez-Canamares  6-3, but fought back to the win the match 6-4, 10-7.

The final match off the court was at No. 5 singles where Lopez Gomez took the first set against Kevin Sielmann. The next two sets were close and in the end, Sielmann was able to hold off Lopez Gomez 3-6, 7-5, 10-8.

The Eagles will look to rebound against another NCAA II foe, Flagler, at Embry-Riddle's Crotty Tennis Complex at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Flagler-ERAU match was originally slated for Feb. 5, but was rescheduled due to inclement weather.
