DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The third-ranked Embry-Riddle baseball team showed its mettle on Tuesday, winning a pair of games in come-from-behind fashion over No. 10 Cumberland. The Eagles scored the game-winning run in each game in their last at-bat.
With the wins, ERAU improves to 16-9 on the year, while the Bulldogs fall to 15-9.
Game 1 - ERAU 6, CU 3 (9 inn.)
Both games on Tuesday were slated to be seven-inning contests, but the two teams needed a couple extra innings to settle the first game.
The Bulldogs jumped out in front on the strength of a Josciel Veras two-out, two-run single in the first inning. A pair of two-out walks allowed Veras the opportunity to come through with a base hit that put CU ahead, 2-0.
ERAU got off to a good start in its half of the first, with
Kyle Chastain and
Jake Cavender singling to open the inning.
Kevin Lindheim grounded into a double play that looked to kill the rally, but
Darryl Knight delivered a two-out RBI single to drive in Chastain, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Cumberland regained a two-run lead in the third inning when Veras took ball four to draw a walk, but the ball got away from Knight, allowing Justin Byrd to come home on the wild pitch.
Trailing 3-1, the Blue and Gold got a long two-run home run from an unlikely source in the fourth -
Kyle Buchanan. Buchanan, who only had one extra-base hit this season, launched a 3-2 pitch well over the fence in left field, knotting the game at 3-3.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the ninth, when the Eagles jumped on Austin Williams with back-to-back singles from Chastain and Cavender to open the frame, setting up first-and-third with nobody out. CU went to the bullpen and brought in Stevie Smith, who ended up throwing just two pitches. The first one nearly hit Lindheim; the second pitch was deposited over the left-field wall by Lindheim for a walk-off three-run home run, giving the Eagles a 6-3 win.
Cavender went 4-for-5 with a run scored while Buchanan was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Lindheim finished 2-for-5 with a home run, stolen base and three RBIs.
Matt Jacobs came off the bench and went 2-for-2 in his two plate appearances.
Tyler Cyr threw the first five innings, allowing three runs on three hits with five walks and six strikeouts.
David Lidyard (3-1) got the win out of the bullpen, throwing four perfect innings of relief with two strikeouts. The two Eagle pitchers combined to set down the final 17 Bulldogs in a row.
Chris Hall and Byrd each went 1-for-4 with a run scored, while Veras was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Jake Collier threw the first six innings for CU, allowing three runs on 10 hits, walking one and striking out six. Williams (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts in two innings.
Game 2 - ERAU 5, CU 4
In the second game, Cumberland took the lead first, just as it had in the first game. Hall drove home Richie Seaton with two outs in the second, putting the Bulldogs ahead, 1-0.
ERAU tied the game on an RBI infield single off the bat of
Jordan Johnson in the fourth. Johnson drove in
Liam Goodall, who had moved to third on a fly ball hit by
J Rhet Montana that fell between the center fielder and right fielder, either of whom could've made the catch.
CU roared back with three runs scored on the first four pitches of the fifth inning. Sam Lind hit a home run down the left-field line to leadoff the inning, putting Cumberland ahead, 2-1. After Ricky Coleman singled on the next pitch from
Clayton Wagner, Brady North connected for a two-run home run to right field to make it a 4-1 game.
The Eagles trailed until the bottom of the sixth, when they sent nine batters to the plate. The inning began with a routine fly ball hit by Montana to fairly deep left-center, but Coleman dropped the ball, allowing Montana to reach third base on the error. Johnson singled Montana home with an infield base hit on the next pitch, making it 4-2. Five batters later, Lindheim stepped up with the bases loaded and two outs. The senior outfielder came up big with a base hit to center field, scoring Johnson and Buchanan to tie the game. Knight then delivered a single to left, scoring Chastain from second base with what would prove to be the game-winning run.
Cumberland mounted a rally in the seventh, with Seaton and Andrew Haney singling to open the inning. The Eagles caught a break when Seaton overran second base on Haney's bunt single, allowing
Ronnie Lozada to throw behind the runner for the tag out at second. After Hall walked, Lozada got a fly out and a line out to end the game with the Eagles victorious, 5-4.
Johnson went 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Lindheim was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Knight finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and Montana was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Wagner threw the first four innings, allowing all four runs on nine hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Lozada (1-1) picked up his first win of the season, throwing the final 1.1 innings of the game, giving up just two hits and a walk with a strikeout.
Hall was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base for Cumberland, while Haney was 3-for-4 and Coleman was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Lind finished 2-for-4 with a walk and a home run and North ended up 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk.
Clint Meadows (3-1) took the loss, hurling 5.2 innings, allowing five runs (one earned) on nine hits with three walks, two hit batters and four strikeouts.
The Eagles are back in action tomorrow afternoon with a 3:30 p.m. contest against Clarke (Iowa) at Sliwa Stadium.
