DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Nine walks from the Embry-Riddle pitching staff did the Eagles in on Wednesday as the visiting Clarke Crusaders took a 6-4 decision from the third-ranked Embry-Riddle baseball team at Sliwa Stadium.
The loss drops the Blue and Gold to 16-10 on the season, while the Crusaders improve to 7-8.
Clarke got on the board first thanks to a two-out RBI single off the bat of Nate McMullen in the top of the second that scored Arsenio Watlington, who drew a one-out walk in the inning.
The Eagles quickly got the run back in the bottom half of the inning.
J Rhet Montana fisted a single to right with one out, then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Jordan Johnson then knocked Montana in with a groundout to short, tying the game at 1-1.
The Crusaders batted around in the fourth, scoring four times to take a 5-1 lead. Nico Piscopo was hit by the first pitch of the inning from
Dylan Demarest, and two batters later Brett LaMere reached on an infield single. McMullen then hit a tailor-made double-play ball to
Colt Hankamer at second base, but Hankamer misplayed the ball for an error that loaded the bases with one out. Chris Hefner drew a bases-loaded walk, which was followed by an Anthony Razo single that scored LaMere and McMullen. After
Brian Johnson relieved Demarest, Dillon Coates drove Hefner home with a sacrifice fly, capping the scoring in the inning.
CU added another run in the fifth when Watlington scored on a wild pitch. Watlington reached on a walk, advanced to third on a two-base throwing error by
Brian Johnson on a failed pickoff attempt, then came home on the wild pitch.
Embry-Riddle started to come back in the sixth, using RBI doubles from
Kevin Lindheim and Montana to cut the deficit to 6-3.
Darryl Knight singled home
Jake Cavender in the eighth to make it 6-4, but Montana grounded into a 6-3 double play to end the inning.
Lorenzo Boden delivered a pinch-hit two-out single in the bottom of the ninth to bring up the potential tying run, but
Hunter Bruehl fouled out to right on the first pitch he saw from Chris Ervin, ending the game with a 6-4 final score.
Lindheim and Montana each went 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and RBI, while
Kyle Chastain was 2-for-4 with a run scored and
Liam Goodall was 2-for-4.
Demarest took the loss, falling to 0-1 on the year. Demarest allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits in 3.1 innings, walking five and striking out two.
Razo went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and two RBIs while McMullen was 1-for-4 with a run scored, RBI and stolen base. Watlington walked and scored twice and LaMere finished 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
Andrew Redman (2-1) got the win, throwing the first eight innings. Redman allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits, walking one and striking out seven. Ervin picked up his first save of the year, pitching the ninth inning, allowing one hit.
The Eagles continue the home stand on Friday (Mar. 14) when they host Northwood in the first game of a three-game Sun Conference series.
