COLUMBIA, Ky. - The third-ranked Embry-Riddle Eagles got an eighth inning two-run home run from
Kyle Buchanan to earn a 5-3 road win over No. 15 Lindsey Wilson on Wednesday to conclude their spring break trip at 2-2. The Eagles (20-13) took an early 1-0 lead and a 3-1 lead before the Blue Raiders (15-16) battled back twice to tie it, but Buchanan's homer late in the game was enough for the Blue and Gold.
The first run of the game came off a
Kevin Lindheim double in the first, chasing in
Kyle Chastain after the Eagle leadoff man singled then moved to second on a
Liam Goodall sacrifice bunt. Lindheim took a Jason Turner pitch to deep left center, hitting off the fence allowing Chastain to trot home for a 1-0 ERAU lead.
Â
Despite a weak infield single in the last of the first, Poncedeleon worked smoothly through the top of the LWC lineup and his team almost gave him a two run lead when
J Rhet Montana reached third with just one out in the next half inning. However, a strikeout and pop up stranded the Eagle third baseman just 90 feet away from the plate.
Â
The Blue Raiders got a runner to second in the second frame, but Poncedeleon got a nice defensive play from
Jake Cavender at short to end the threat.
Â
Embry-Riddle got back-to-back two-out singles from Lindheim and
Darryl Knight, but Turner left them on the bases by getting a fly ball from Cavender that was caught by the LWC centerfielder for the final out of the top of the third.
Â
Poncedeleon had to pitch himself out of a jam in the fourth after a pair of base hits sandwiched around an error loaded the bases with just one out. The Eagle right-hander recorded his sixth strikeout of the contest by fanning Nick Hoffman before inducing a shallow pop up from Trey Davis to keep the visitors in front.
Â
Mark Silva doubled with one out in the fifth, just the second extra-base hit Poncedeleon has given up in 2014. Silva moved to third on a strikeout that had to be thrown down to first and a passed ball allowed the Blue Raider shortstop to knot the score at 1-1.
Â
Lindheim continued with his hot streak at the plate in the sixth, singling on the first Turner pitch before Knight drew a walk to put two on with no outs. Cavender's sacrifice bunt attempt was hit right back to Turner on the mound who threw to third to force out Lindheim the lead runner for the first out of the inning.
Jordan Johnson sliced a ball back up the middle after Montana struck out swinging, loading the bases for
Matt Jacobs. The sophomore first baseman swung on the first pitch he saw from Turner, dropping it in left field, scoring a pair of Eagle runs as Embry-Riddle took a 3-1 lead.
Â
Poncedeleon wasn't fazed by the second Eagle error of the afternoon, ending the inning by getting a weak ground ball back to the mound that he flipped to Jacobs at first for the final out of the frame.
Â
Turner gave up a leadoff walk and a base hit to Goodall in the seventh, but Lindheim and Knight struck out before Cavender popped up to end the Eagle threat.
Â
The failure to score insurance runs came back to haunt the Eagles as Lindsey Wilson scored twice in the seventh to tie the game, with the big blow coming on a two-out single up the middle from Jordan Berry who notched his 40
th RBI of the season to score the tying run from second.
Stetson Nelson was asked to relieve Poncedeleon with a pair of Blue Raiders on the bases and got a fly out to keep the game tied at 3-3.
Â
Sam Ross relieved Turner to begin the visitor eighth, issuing a leadoff walk to Montana before the Eagle third baseman swiped second for the second time in the game. Ross made quick work of Johnson and Jacobs, and it looked like the Blue Raider reliever would get out of the inning with no damage. However,
Kyle Buchanan had other ideas, taking the first pitch from Ross over the fence in left center field for a no-doubter that gave the visitors a 5-3 advantage, the second homer of the season for the Eagle centerfielder.
Â
Nelson worked around a leadoff single in the last of the eighth to retire the side without allowing the runner to advance, keeping the Eagles in front, 5-3.
Â
Neither starter factored in the decision as Poncedeleon threw 6.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with a pair of walks and nine strikeouts. Turner tossed 7.0 innings, surrendering three runs on nine hits with two walks and seven Ks.
Nelson (5-2) got the victory, throwing 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit with one strikeout. Lozada collected his sixth save of the season.
Buchanan finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs on his home run and Jacobs went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs while Lindheim ended the game at 3-for-5 with an RBI.
After Nelson got the first out of the ninth,
Ronnie Lozada entered for his sixth save of the 2014 season, getting a groundout to first for the final out of the contest.
The Eagles return to Daytona Beach and the friendly confines of Sliwa Stadium to host Indiana Tech in a three-game series, starting with a single game on Friday night at 6 p.m. and concluding with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
