ERAU Men’s Tennis Downs Toledo 6-1

Lulke de Caires notched a straight-set singles win against Toledo
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team closed out a three-match-in-three-days stint with a decisive 6-1 win over NCAA I University of Toledo (5-12) at the Crotty Tennis Complex on Sunday afternoon. Playing according to NCAA I rules, where the three doubles matches count for one point, the Eagles won the doubles point and took five of six singles to improve to 5-2 on the year.

On the second doubles court, Patrick Besch and Jaime Sanchez-Canamares Rios registered an 8-5 win over Mark Singnil and Nicky Wong, but the Rockets got a doubles victory of their own when Ryan Jorgensen and Boris Pak topped Miguel Lopez Gomez and Luke de Caires 8-5 on court three, leaving it up to the match at the top spot to decide the doubles point.

Deni Zmak and Simon Felix took an early 4-3 lead, but Toledo's Stjepan Sisko and Garrett Cona overtook the Eagle duo and continued to hold a one-game lead until the score was 7-6. Zmak and Felix were able to stave off match point and won three games in a row to clinch the doubles point for the Eagles with a 9-7 win over Sisko and Cona.

De Caires was the first to notch a singles point for the Eagles as he downed Pak 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot in the lineup. Besch stumbled at the start of his match on court four, dropping the first set 6-1 to Jorgensen. However, the ERAU senior stormed back to take the second set 6-0 and notched the Eagles' third point with a 6-1 win in the third.

Next to Besch on court five, Lopez Gomez dispatched Cona in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, to assure the Eagles of the team victory, and Felix followed with a 6-3, 6-0 defeat of Wong at the third singles spot to make the score 5-0 in favor of the home team.

At No. 1 singles, Zmak earned an easy 6-0 win in the first set, but Singnil jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second and seemed poised to send the match to a decisive third set. Zmak, however, regained his focus and won five games in a row for 6-4 second set win, which gave him his 16th win of the year.

The final match off the court was at No. 2 singles where Sisko took the first set 6-2, and held off a fierce rally by Sanchez-Canamares to take the second 7-6 (5) for the Rockets' only point of the afternoon.

The Eagles' next match will be at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday when they host another NCAA I program, Belmont, at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
