DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle baseball program reached rarified air on Saturday by winning the 1,000th game in school history. The Eagles swept a doubleheader from Indiana Tech, 9-1 and 10-3 to improve to 1,000-427-1 since the program's inception in 1989. ERAU (23-13), which celebrated Head Coach
Randy Stegall's 300th victory at Embry-Riddle on Friday night, won its fourth and fifth consecutive games, sweeping the Warriors (9-11-1) for the first time since 2009.
Embry-Riddle returns to the diamond on Monday, March 24 to host Northwestern Ohio at Sliwa Stadium, followed by a Tuesday matchup with the Racers. Both games are slated for first pitch at 6 p.m.
Game 1 - ERAU 9, ITU 1
Eagle starter
Corey Tufts (6-2) got all the run support he needed in the bottom of the first as the sophomore tossed six strong innings against Indiana Tech, allowing just one run on four hits as the Eagles cruised to a 9-1 victory in the twin bill opener.
A 1-2-3 top of the first by Tufts setup the Eagle offense, beginning with a leadoff single from
Kyle Chastain and backed up by a
Liam Goodall double and
Darryl Knight sacrifice fly that gave the hosts a quick, 2-0 lead.
Tufts picked off a runner in the second inning, striking out Jacob Dunnichay to end the frame and Knight gunned down Alex McKinstry at second in the third as Tufts faced just one over the minimum through three.
Goodall scored on a
Kevin Lindheim sacrifice fly in the last of the third before Knight,
Jake Cavender and
J Rhet Montana strung together back-to-back singles against starter Justin Harvey to take a 4-0 advantage into the fourth.
Tufts faced the only real threat from ITU in the fourth as the Warriors got on the board for the first time in the series on a RBI fielder's choice with the bases loaded, cutting the Eagle lead to 4-1. However, Goodall collected his second RBI of the day in the next half-inning, scoring Chastain from second after the ERAU outfielder walked and stole second base.
Both teams went quietly in the fifth, but the home team busted the game wide open with a four-run sixth against four separate Warrior relievers. ERAU sent 10 batters to the dish, starting with a
Hunter Bruehl single and highlighted by Goodall's third hit of the day, driving in a pair of runs, as well as RBI singles from Lindheim and Montana as Embry-Riddle raced out to a 9-1 cushion.
Brian Johnson entered in the seventh for Tufts, walking one but retiring the side on a weak pop up to second base as the Eagles' won game No. 999 in program history.
Goodall finished 3-for-3 with a career-high four RBIs and three runs scored, while Montana went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Lindheim recorded a pair of RBIs in the victory.
Game 2 - ERAU 10, ITU 3
The series finale was decided fairly early in the contest as the Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 lead with six runs in the first inning before closing the game out with four unanswered runs for the 10-3 decision. Stegall's club made sure they needed just one opportunity for win 1,000, improving to 8-5 all-time against Indiana Tech.
Justin Kalusa couldn't get out of the first inning for the Warriors, giving up four hits and a walk as the hosts nearly put the game out of reach before the second frame.
Kyle Chastain reached on an error to start the inning, scoring on a Lindheim double for a 1-0 lead. Knight plated Lindheim with a single to left before Kalusa got two outs and the ITU left-hander issued a walk to Montana before Johnson singled in the third ERAU run of the contest. With two Eagles on and two away,
Hunter Bruehl launched his first home run of the season over the right field fence to double the Embry-Riddle lead to 6-0. Curtis Wise got the final out of the inning after coming in to the game for Kalusa.
The Warriors touched up
Clayton Wagner for a run in the second and two more in the third before
David Lidyard relieved the ERAU starter, stranding two Warriors on the bases with a strikeout and groundout.
Bruehl chased in a run in the home third, scoring himself when Chastain singled to left as the Eagles regained a comfortable lead at 8-3.
Lidyard stranded three runners total in the fourth and fifth and his offense added an insurance run in the fifth and again in the sixth before
Bruce Wong pitched the seventh, getting a 5-4-3 double play to end the game.
Lidyard (5-1) got the win, throwing 3.2 innings of relief, allowing three hits with one strikeout. Bruehl recorded five RBIs on two hits, while Johnson finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The baseball program becomes the first Embry-Riddle team to reach the 1,000-win mark, doing so in just 1,428 games, a winning percentage of .700. The Eagles have averaged nearly 40 wins per season (39.1) since 1989. The Eagles have won 14 regular season Sun Conference titles, five conference tournament crowns, six NAIA Region XIV championships, making 12 appearances (third-most all-time) at the NAIA World Series. 29 Eagles have earned NAIA All-America accolades with 37 Eagles claiming Honorable Mention All-America honors.
John Filor spent three seasons at the helm of the Eagle baseball program, compiling an overall record of 36-76 (.321) before
Greg Guilliams took over in 1992, beginning a 16-year stint as Embry-Riddle's skipper. Guilliams elevated the program to national prominence with a 662-243-1 (.731) record, including eight conference titles and six trips to the NAIA World Series, reaching the title game in 2005.
Randy Stegall took over for Guilliams prior to the 2008 season and has gone 302-108 (.737), winning The Sun Conference regular season every year and advancing to Lewiston, Idaho for the NAIA World Series for six consecutive seasons.
