DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The third-ranked Embry-Riddle Eagles bounced back from a sweep at the hands of Bellevue with a 3-2 win over visiting Cornerstone on Thursday night. The Blue and Gold (11-9) got timely hitting and solid pitching in the victory. Cornerstone (6-5) had a late rally fall short in the ninth inning as the Eagles improve to 2-3 in one-run games.

Starting for the first time in 2014, sophomore Dylan Demarest fell into trouble early on, walking the Golden Eagles' leadoff hitter in the first at-bat of the game. Travis Gordon moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before running to third on a wild pitch and scoring when Nick Covello grounded a pitch to the right side of the infield for a 1-0 Cornerstone lead.

Demarest settled down and retired six consecutive CU batters in the second and third, but his counterpart, Kly Marburger, did the same to the ERAU offense, keeping his team in front until the bottom of the fourth inning.

Liam Goodall drew a five-pitch walk to begin the frame and Jake Cavender moved him to third on a double down the left field line before Kevin Lindheim and Darryl Knight delivered back-to-back sacrifice flies to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.

Demarest worked through the fifth smoothly, but a two-base throwing error to start the sixth put the tying run at second base for Cornerstone with no outs. A groundout put the runner at third before a single through the infield knotted the game at 2-2. A walk issued put two Golden Eagles on base and chased Demarest from the game as Corey Tufts relieved his fellow sophomore with one out. Tufts struck out one before a soft single to left loaded the bases for CU. Tufts quickly pitched ahead of Zack Meyer and on 0-2, induced a ground ball that Jordan Johnson fielded and recorded a force out at second to end the threat.

Embry-Riddle regained a one-run advantage in its half of the sixth when Goodall singled in Kyle Chastain from third after Ryan Maxon recorded a base hit to start the frame, and his courtesy runner Chastain stole second and moved to third on a throwing error.

Tufts got the first two outs of the seventh before Stetson Nelson entered the game and Nelson moved the game along to the ninth by keeping the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard.

Ronnie Lozada came on in the ninth to attempt his third save of the year, and after fanning one batter, surrendered two consecutive walks. Cornerstone elected to sacrifice the runners to second and third and Lozada, after a mound visit from pitching coach Dave Therneau, threw one pitch to Nick Covello who popped it up to Johnson at second for the third and final out.

The Eagles got six hits as a team, two from Cavender while holding Cornerstone to just five base hits. Demarest tossed 5.1 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits with five Ks. Tufts (4-2) got the win in 1.1 innings of reliefe, and Lozada notched his third save of the season.

Embry-Riddle returns to Sliwa Stadium for a three-game Sun Conference series against Thomas (Ga.) this Friday and Saturday, March 7-8. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. while Saturday's twin bill is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
