MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - 13th-ranked Embry-Riddle wasted a solid pitching performnace from Daniel Poncedeleon in a 3-1 loss to St. Thomas on Friday night in the two teams' series opener. The Eagles (30-15, 19-3) failed to get a big hit against Bobcat starter Eddie Cody as the senior right-hander tossed a complete game against ERAU, striking out seven en route to the upset win. St. Thomas (28-15, 16-6) benefited from a pair of Embry-Riddle errors in the third inning, scoring two runs to take the lead before adding an insurance run in the eighth for the 3-1 final.

The Eagles and Bobcats will meet tomorrow, Saturday, April 12 at 12 p.m. for a doubleheader.

Embry-Riddle scored its only run of the contest in the top of the first when Jake Cavender singled to right field with two outs, scoring Kevin Lindheim from third for a 1-0 advantage. The rally started with a two-out double from Lindheim before a Darryl Knight single moved the Eagle to third base.

Poncedeleon didn't allow a hit through his first two frames as ERAU took a 1-0 lead into the last of the third, but the Bobcats struck for two straight singles to start the third before the Blue and Gold committed two errors that allowed a pair of STU runs to score as STU took a 2-1 lead.

Knight started the fourth off with a triple to left field, but the Eagles couldn't capitalize as Cody got out of the inning with no damage.

The score remained 2-1 in favor of STU as both pitchers showed control over the offenses. The best opportunity for the Eagles came in the eighth when two consecutive hits put runners on first and second, but following a fielder's choice that cut down the runner going from first to second, Cody struck out Knight and got Cavender to ground out to end the threat.

St. Thomas chipped on an insurance run in the eighth when Oscar Aguirre singled in a run, but Poncedeleon kept the Bobcats from scoring further with a ground out and fly out.

The Eagles got the tying run to the plate after Hunter Bruehl worked a two-out walk, but Cody ended the contest with a strikeout to seal the win.
