SAINT LEO, Fla. – NAIA No. 2 Embry-Riddle men's tennis dropped a 7-2 decision to NCAA II No. 14 Saint Leo, Thursday at the Saint Leo Tennis Center. The Eagles will take a 5-2 record into their next match, which will be on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. against Cardinal Stritch.
Saint Leo jumped out to an early lead with a doubles sweep. Egor Panyushkin and Netanel Alcabas got the scoring started for the Lions with an 8-5 win over Fabian Zierlyn and
Carlos Becke at the second position. Alex Theiler and Bruno Sisti bested
Deni Zmak and
Jaime Sanchez-Canamares Rios 8-6 at the top spot, and Fons Verberne, brother of ERAU junior
Juan Verberne, partnered with Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio for an 8-6 win over Luke deCaires and
Miguel Lopez Gomez at the third position.
The Eagles got two points back in singles as Zmak downed Theiler 6-4, 6-2 on court one, and Sanchez-Canamares pulled out a 6-4, 7-5 win over Panyushkin at No. 2.
However, the Lions won each of the remaining singles matches, including Alcabas' three-set (6-4, 3-6, 2-6) win over Becke at the third flight to secure the win.
