ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team suffered its third loss of the season, falling to Flagler 9-0 on Thursday. The Eagles are now 0-3 while the Saints move to 5-1 overall.
The Saints won easily at No. 1 doubles, as Mary Jo Nanti and Kelly Burge bested
Hui-I Huang and
Anna Gotz 8-1. The remaining matches were both close and in the end, Kelly Stewart and Laura Kelly were able to get by
Giovanna Tomiotto and Meena Bennet on court three, and Thaisa Pereira and Lizanne Jinkertz escaped with a 9-8 win over
Paula Ortiz Couder and
Kathryn Bock with an 8-2 victory in the tiebreaker.
Five of the six singles matches were decided in straight sets, including Stewart's 6-1, 6-0 win over Huang at the top spot that clinched the team victory.
Ortiz Couder took Nanti to three sets before eventually falling to the Flagler sophomore 6-4, 5-7, 10-6.
The Eagles will return to the court on March 4 when they travel to Melbourne to face Florida Tech.
