DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team suffered a 5-0 loss to second-ranked Barry (13-1) on Sunday at the Crotty Tennis Complex, however the match was much closer than the final score indicated as the Eagles (7-7) were in contention for wins in each of the four unfinished matches.
 
Barry took an early 2-0 lead with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles flights. The 20^th-ranked pair Ana Pain and Sonja Larsen topped Kathryn Bock and Paula Ortiz Couder 8-2 on court two, and Alisa Rudenko and Judith Bohenkamp bested Giovanna Tomiotto and Meena Bennett 8-1 on court three.
 
The match at the top singles spot between ERAU's Hui-I Huang and Anna Götz and Barry's Emma Onila and Barbora Kijasova lasted close to 90 minutes. Trailing 5-6, Huang and Götz won the next two points to go up 7-6. The Barry team held on the next service game to make it 7-7 and both sides won a point apiece to force a tiebreaker at 8-8. The score was knotted at 3-3 in the tiebreaker, but Onila and Kijasova won four points in a row to take the match 9-8 (7-3) and put the Buccaneers up 3-0.
 
Singles play saw Bohenkamp add a point to the Barry tally with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Bennett at the sixth spot, and Onila recorded the clincher by topping Huang 6-2, 6-3 on court one.
 
Playing at the fifth position, Bock took the first set against Rudenko 6-3 and was up 4-2 when the match was called. Next to her on court four, Tomiotto lost the first set to Kijasova 6-3, but won the second 6-2 to force at third set, which was tied 1-1 when the match ended.
 
After dropping the first set 6-2 to Larsen, Ortiz Couder rebounded in the second and was tied with the Buccaneers' third flight player 5-5 at the end of the match. Ranked No. 21, Pain edged Götz 7-6 (8-6) in the first set and the two No. 2 players finished the day knotted at 1-1 in the second.
 
The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday, hosting No. 7 Nova Southeastern at 3:30 p.m. at the Crotty Tennis Complex. Tuesday's match will be a make-up as the contest, which was originally scheduled for March 25, was postponed due to bad weather.
