ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team earned its fourth shutout of the year with an 8-0 road win against Eckerd (2-15) on Saturday. Now 7-6 on the year, the Eagles will have little time to rest before their 11 a.m. match against second-ranked Barry on Sunday.
Saturday's contest began with the Blue and Gold surrendering just three games in doubles play. The Eagles notched shutouts at the second and third positions as
Kathryn Bock and
Paula Ortiz Couder blanked Laurence Bourgault and Isabella Wong 8-0, and
Giovanna Tomiotto and
Meena Bennett did the same against Madeline Carlson and Gabrielle Hartman.
Anna Gotz and
Hui-I Huang completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 victory against MaryAnn Aaron and Emily Fridrik to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
In singles play, Huang kept the Eagles' shutout streak going by blanking Fridrik 6-0, 6-0 on court one. Playing at the second spot, Götz scored the clinching point by dispatching Aaron 6-0, 6-2 and Ortiz Couder followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Bourgault at the third flight.
Tomiotto and Bennett wrapped up the day's play by registering a pair of 8-0 shutouts against Wong and Hartman, respectively.
