DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 10th-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team (7-4) swept all six singles matches en route to an 8-1 defeat of No. 49 Palm Beach Atlantic (11-7), Sunday at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
The Eagles' second flight tandem of
Juan Ortiz Couder and
Andres Donayre was the first to earn a point for the Blue and Gold, dispatching Pato Zarazua and Pietro de Silva 8-0. The Sailfish managed to get the point back, however, when Rafael Lenz and Bernardo Ferreira upended
Carlos Becke and
Deepak Vishavkarma 8-5 at the top spot.
Down 4-1, ERAU's
Luke de Caires and
Rodolfo Arreygue rallied to close the gap against Phillipp Hoffmann and Stanislav Feofilov, and trailing 7-6, the Eagle duo held serve to tie things up at 7-7. Both sides held on their next service games, respectively, and in the resulting tiebreaker, de Caires and Arreygue dominated the PBAU team 7-1 to give the Blue and Gold a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Ortiz Couder scored the first singles point, downing Zarazua 6-3, 7-6 (1) at No. 1 singles. Playing at the second position, Becke trailed Lenz 4-1 in the first frame, but the junior rebounded to take the set 6-4 and widened the Eagle lead to 4-1 with a 6-4 victory in the second.
The clinching point for the Eagles came on court three where Arreygue bested Hoffmann 6-4, 6-4.
De Caires downed Ferreira 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 on court four, followed by Donayre's 6-3, 6-4 win over de Silva on court five, and Faucher topped Carlos Meneses 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 to close out the Eagles' scoring.
The Eagles will be back at the Crotty Tennis Complex at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday to host Eckerd.
