2017 @ERAUBaseball Season Comes to an End as Lynn Takes Doubleheader

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The 2017 Embry-Riddle baseball season came to an end on Saturday afternoon at ERAU's Sliwa Stadium as Lynn swept the twin bill, 14-11 and 13-11 to complete the series sweep of the Eagles. With the losses, the Eagles finish the season at 14-35 as Saturday's games marked the final contests for Embry-Riddle Athletics as provisional members of NCAA II and the Sunshine State Conference. The Fighting Knights (30-20) held off two Eagle rallies on the day as ERAU brought the tying run to the plate in the finale and on base in the opener, but ultimately the hosts couldn't manage a win.

Game 1 - Lynn 14, ERAU 11
Lynn got a first inning grand slam to take what appeared to be a commanding lead over the Eagles in the first moments of the day, but the home team answered right back with a five-run frame before extending the lead to 7-2 an inning later.

Jonathan Camp collected an RBI in the first with a single through the right side, scoring Christopher Medina, and Zach Howard followed with the first of his three home runs of the day, driving in Camp to trim the Lynn lead to 4-3. After Jordan Brown and Ryan Maxon singled, Kyle Guttveg brought them both in with a triple down the right field line, giving the Eagles a 5-4 lead.

Tim Retamoza faced the minimum in the second and ERAU tacked on two more in its half of the frame when Camp homered to right center with Medina on base for a 7-4 lead.

Austin Lee took over on the mound in the third, equaling Retamoza's three-up, three-down with one of his own, but the visitors would get a run back in the fourth on an infield single, plating a run as the score moved to 7-5.

Robbie Hanlon hit his second home run in as many games to lead off the Eagle fourth, pushing the ERAU advantage to 8-5, but the Fighting Knights pushed across three runs in the fifth thanks to four hits to knot the game at 8-8.

Embry-Riddle came right back in the bottom of the fifth when A.J. Mazzurco singled in Howard, but this lead was short lived as Lynn plated four runs in the sixth as the Eagle defense committed four errors in the frame, resulting in a 12-9 lead for the visitors.

Hanlon homered again leading off the sixth, trimming the lead to 12-10, and the Eagles got one run closer when Howard brought in Medina with an RBI groundout.

Matthew Russell relieved Lee in the seventh and the Fighting Knights greeted him with a one-out homer to extend the lead fo 13-11 where the score would stay the game until the eighth when Lynn added an insurance run.

Entering the bottom of the ninth, the Eagles trailed 14-11, but back-to-back singles from Mazzurco and Maxon came before Malphurs singled to load the bases with one out. Unfortunately, Hanlon couldn't hit his third long ball of the game, but rather would ground into a game-ending double play as Lynn claimed the series.

Maxon and Guttveg each had three hits, while the quartet of Hanlon, Medina, Camp and Howard each had a pair of hits. Camp and Howard finished with three RBIs apiece while Guttveg and Hanlon each had two RBIs.

Game 2 - Lynn 13, ERAU 11
The season finale almost had a storybook ending for the five Eagle seniors as the Blue and Gold nearly rallied from a 13-6 deficit in the bottom of the ninth, getting to within 13-11 before the Fighting Knights escaped with the two-run win.

Trailing 13-6 after a three-run top of the ninth, Hanlon started the inning with a single up the middle before Mazzurco tripled in his final collegiate at-bat, pushing home Hanlon for the first Eagle run of the frame. Camp followed with his final college at-bat, ending his Eagle career with a massive home run to straightaway center, the 17th of his career, putting him in a tie with Steve Sabins (2010-11) and Josh Smith (2005-06) for ninth on the career HR list. Camp's homer brought the Eagles to within 13-9, and Howard went back-to-back with Camp to trim the Lynn lead to 13-10. A Lynn pitching change preceded a walk to Jordan Brown with one out and after a fielder's choice, Guttveg tripled to left center, scoring Maxon and bringing the tying run to the plate in the form of Logan Malphurs. The Fighting Knights again went to the pen and this time it worked as Malphurs grounded out to first for the final out of the season.

The late-inning drama came after the Eagles held a 2-1 lead after the third and Lynn taking a 5-2 lead in the sixth. The visitor's advantage grew to 7-2 in the seventh, but Howard gave the hosts a big-time spark when he hit his second grand slam of the year in the last of the seventh, bringing ERAU to within 7-6.

Lynn added three insurance runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth before the Eagle rally in the last half-inning was almost completed.

Howard went 3-for-5 with five RBIs and Camp drove in two on two hits while Hanlon finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

Camp, Malphurs, Maxon and Mazzurco were joined by fellow senior Kenny Burkhead, who got the start in the finale, in playing their final game in an ERAU uniform. Maxon and Malphurs wrapped up five-year careers with the Eagles while Burkhead, Camp and Mazzurco had been in the Embry-Riddle program for three seasons.
