DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 10
th-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to No. 2 Barry 6-3 at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The loss was also the Eagles' first in Sunshine State Conference play as they move to 2-1 on the year and 1-0 in the league, while the Bucs improved to 1-0 in conference play and 3-0 overall.
Barry took an early 2-0 lead when Flavio Matteoli and Fernando Tous topped Lucas Lesoeur and
Deepak Vishavkarma 8-3 at No. 3 doubles, and Blake Bayldon and Viven Versier held off
Juan Ortiz Couder and Lucas Bos 8-4 on court two.
The Blue and Gold got a point back when the seventh-ranked tandem of
Rodolfo Arreygue and
Andres Donayre defeated Carlos Gomez and Pierre Montrieul 8-5 to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Bucs heading into singles.
Bos and Ortiz Couder finished their singles matches within seconds of each other, with both notching straight set victories. Bos downed Filip Zupancic 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, and Ortiz Couder followed with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Montrieul at the top spot to make it 3-2 in favor of ERAU.
Versier leveled the team score at 3-3 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Arreygue on court four and Matteoli held off Lesoeur 7-6 (3), 6-1 at No. 6 to put Barry back in front.
For the second time in as many days, Vishavkarma had to go to three sets against his opponent at No. 2 singles. The ERAU senior took the first set 6-4, but dropped the second by the same margin and Gomez won the third set 6-2 to clinch the victory for the Bucs.
Next up for the Eagles is another NCAA II top-15 showdown as ERAU hosts No. 11 Flagler at the Crotty Tennis Complex on Thursday. Match time is slated for 3:30 p.m.
