DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –
McKenzie Jackson,
Mya Watson and
Kendall Leonard tallied four goals apiece to lead the Embry-Riddle women's lacrosse team to a 22-2 defeat of Montevallo, Tuesday at the ERAU Lacrosse Field. Tuesday's result set a new single-season record for wins for the Blue and Gold as the Eagles improved to 8-3 on the year, while the Falcons fell to 4-5.
The Eagles recorded a program-high 53 shots, besting the previous total of 50 against the Falcons last year (March 3, 2018). Nine players scored for ERAU as the Eagles posted a 20-goal performance for the third straight game.
"Today was a big accomplishment for us," ERAU Head Coach
Marissa Giannerini said. "We broke our win record from last season, which aligns with a fundamental goal we have to keep getting better and laying the building blocks for this program. The team is playing fast while growing in their understanding of the game just in time for a very tough conference schedule. I am proud of their work ethic and commitment to never settling. I am very much looking forward to seeing what the momentum we have been gaining does for us throughout the rest of the season!"
Jackson's four-goal night marked a career milestone for the sophomore as she became the second ERAU women's lacrosse player to score 100 career goals. Jackson's performance on Tuesday also included two assists, 11 ground balls and 11 draw controls.
Leonard's four scores marked her best single-game performance as she finished with five points, seven ground balls, and five draw controls. Watson registered two caused turnovers and two ground balls on the night to go with her sixth four-goal performance of the season.
The Eagles wasted little time establishing themselves on offense as Leonard found the back of the net for the game's first goal just 12 seconds into the contest. The Eagles won the first nine draws of the game and 13 minutes into the contest, the home team led 8-0.
The Falcons capitalized on a man-up opportunity to score their first goal at the 14:47 mark, but the Eagles came back with four unanswered goals to close out the first half with a 12-1 lead.
The second 30 minutes saw the Eagle defense keep the Falcons in check, while the offense rattled off 10 more goals. Montevallo managed to get one back with 1:25 left to play, but
Gillian Greenberg reclaimed the 20-goal advantage when she finished a pass from
Tori Lammes with six seconds left in the game to close out the scoring.
The Eagles open Sunshine State Conference play on the road on Saturday when they travel across the state to take on No. 24 Saint Leo at 1 p.m.
