DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle Athletics Department announced the ERAU Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Year at the 2019 Athletic Awards Banquet on Tuesday evening, as Fanny Kristiansson of women's soccer and Calahan Warren of the men's cross country and track & field teams earned the department's highest yearly honor. Kristiansson and Warren were selected from a group of current Embry-Riddle student-athletes who submitted applications and were interviewed by a committee comprised of ERAU students, faculty and staff, and were presented with the Steve & Vicky Ridder Scholarships at the conclusion of the banquet.

A commitment to academic achievement, campus and community involvement, personal holistic growth and a drive to excel in sport exemplifies the spirit of Steve and Vicky Ridder and the scholarship that bears their names. Each head coach is asked to submit a nominee that represents the ERAU athletics department ideal package - the student-person-player - and those nominees must then submit an essay describing the ways in which they exude the aforementioned characteristics.

Kristiansson completed her junior season with the ERAU women's soccer team in the fall, playing 522 minutes in net for the Blue and Gold. The Stockholm, Sweden native has a career 1.26 Goals against average, making 101 saves for a 74.8 save percentage, while registering 11 shutouts during her three seasons with the Eagles.

Kristiansson boasts a 3.95 GPA in the accelerated Bachelor's to Master's Civil Engineering program, focusing on transportation. A three-time Sunshine State Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient, Kristiansson was also named a 2018-19 ERAU Athletics Eagles of Excellence Scholarship winner, and has earned Dean's List recognition in every semester of her college career. She serves as the President of the ERAU Daytona Beach chapter of Engineers Without Borders and is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineering student organization. Kristiansson has also been certified as a first responder with ERAU's Medical Emergency Disaster Relief Club.

In the summer of 2018, Kristiansson was selected out of a pool of nearly 8,000 applicants as the Swedish representative for the Telenor Youth Forum. Together with the Telenor Group (a telecommunication company), the Nobel Peace Center in Norway and 23 other students from 12 different countries, Kristiansson is working to tackle global problems. Kristiansson was honored by attending the Nobel Peace Prize ceremonies this past December in Oslo, Norway after heading to Bangkok, Thailand last May to create digital exhibitions that use big data to do social good.

"Fanny is a woman of strong integrity, gifted intelligence, an authentic desire to make the world a better place, and a quiet work ethic that is second-to-none," ERAU women's soccer head coach Samantha Bohon said. "Our women's soccer program, that has produced exceptional student-athletes and previous Steve & Vicky Ridder Scholarship winners, is better off because Fanny Kristiansson is a part of it. Fanny has taken the bar and raised it to an entirely new, global level. She is truly making a difference here and worldwide."

Warren is in the midst of his junior season as a member of the Embry-Riddle men's track & field team, and wrapped up his junior campaign for the ERAU men's cross country team in the fall. The Auburndale, Florida native has been one of Embry-Riddle's premier runners in both cross country and track. Warren helped lead the Eagles to the 2018 Sunshine State Conference Cross Country title, the 2018 NCAA Division II South Region championship and back-to-back Peach Belt Conference Track & Field crowns in 2018 and 2019.

Warren was named an All-SSC cross country performer this past fall and SSC All-Championship roster member after his third-place finish at the SSC Championship. He was also an All-Region honoree with a ninth-place finish at the NCAA II South Region meet and owns the second-fastest 10K time in program history (32:21.49). On the track, Warren is a three-time Peach Belt Conference champion, four-time All-PBC selection and has twice been named the Peach Belt Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week. The Eagle runner is an eight-time USTFCCCA All-Region performer on the track and has qualified for NCAA II National Championship meets three times.

Warren is an Aerospace Physiology major with a 3.8 GPA and a passion for research. He already has become part of cutting-edge research projects in the Aerospace Physiology program, including the physiological impacts on mealworms of consuming polystyrene, the functionalization of carbon nanotubes as a spray coating that can aid in de-icing aircraft windshields and a future research project evaluating different fitness tests used by coaches to more effectively determine VO2 max in cross country runners.

Warren is also an active member of The Tree Initiative, serving as the campus club's treasurer. He has served as an integral part of raising funds in order to donate environmental awareness books to low-income elementary schools, as well as planting several trees on the Embry-Riddle campus.

"Calahan has a dynamic personality and truly loves life," ERAU cross country and track & field head coach Mike Rosolino said. "Calahan is an over-achiever who maximizes his talent and has great relationships with those around him. He is passionate about everything he does and that energy is contagious to all those around him. He is a leader on both the cross country and track & field teams, and has this same determination in the classroom. Calahan has proven to be a mature leader who is respected and admired by all."

Director of Athletics John Phillips also announced the Eagles of Excellence Scholarship recipients for each sport.
