SARASOTA, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's rowing team notched a pair of top-three finishes on Saturday as the Eagles totaled 24.25 points to place sixth in the FIRA Championships. The Florida Gators won the state title with 159 points.
The Freshman/Novice Eight boat of
Casey McMahon,
Alexandra Popielarz,
Gwendolyn Powell,
Tracey Loeffler,
Kassidi Flynn,
Mackenzie Cunningham,
Bethany Thompson,
Alyssa Hodum, and
Rylan Randolph crossed the line in 7:31.12, placing second out of seven boats, less than 10 seconds behind the winning boat from Florida.
The Eagles took third in the DII Four race as the boat of McMahon, Loeffler,
Becca McBride, and
Athena Padgiotis posted a time of 7:56.91, just over 13 seconds behind the winning boat from Florida Tech.
In the Varsity Eight race, ERAU's team of
Kathryn Chilelli,
Lauren Stollenwerk, Powell,
Kaya Treder, Flynn, Popielarz, Thompson,
Rachel Hemsworth, and
Melinda Fix placed fourth in 7:03.39, just over 17 seconds behind FIT's first-place boat.
In the Pairs race, Embry-Riddle's Fix and Popielarz finished fifth in 8:31.78, beating the boat from Tampa by less than three seconds.
The Junior Varsity Eight boat of
Jodie Harmon,
Alina Gagliola,
Alyssa Crystal, Padgiotis, McBride, Hodum, Cunningham,
Julianna Snider, and
Madeline Casper was sixth with a time of 7:57.57.
In the Junior Varsity Four race, ERAU's boat of Harmon, Gagliola, Crystal, Snider, and Casper was sixth with a time of 8:21.58.
The Freshman/Novice Four boat of McMahon,
Sydney Link, Cunningham,
Kayla Tarbox, and Randolph was seventh in 8:57.38.
Embry-Riddle's Varsity Four boat, including Chilelli, Stollenwerk, Treder, Fix, and Hemsworth placed seventh in 7:59.44.
In the combined standings (men and women), the Eagles took third with 118.25 points, narrowly edging Florida Tech (116 points) for the top-three finish. Florida won the overall title with 216 points while Stetson was second with 133 points.
The Eagles will have two weeks to prepare for the SIRA Regional Championships which will be held in Oak Ridge, Tennessee on April 19-20.
