LAKELAND, Fla. - After a three-month break, the Embry-Riddle men's golf team continued its 2023-24 campaign with the Matlock Collegiate Classic, and the Eagles sit in 13th on the leaderboard with 601 (303-298) strokes, only five back of a top-10 spot. Fifteen programs completed two rounds at the par-72, 7,151-yard Lone Palm Golf Club, and the field includes four top-25 teams in No. 10 West Florida, No. 11 Florida Southern, No. 13 Saint Leo, and No. 24 Barton.

Tiago Barni had a blistering start for the Blue and Gold, at one point holding sole possession of first place after notching birdies on three of his first six holes and recording an eagle on his ninth hole. A first-round 71 was the junior's fourth below-par round of the season. Barni also began round two strong, hitting below par on, yet again, three of the first six holes. A second-round 73 has Barni sitting at even par with a 144 in a tie for 13th place, only six shots back of the leader.

The Windermere, Florida native was among the best in the 78-player field on par-5's, averaging 4.25 strokes on such holes, which tied for the best average by an individual.

Brandon Godfrey saw a three-stroke improvement from the first to the second round, picking up a trio of birdies to hold a 149 (76-73) stroke total. His 23 pars are the most on the team after day one.

Edoardo Scialanga pieced together a fantastic second-round 73 supported by three birdies and an eagle on the par-5, 553-yard hole No. 17. It was better than his opening 18 holes by eight strokes, giving the freshman a 154 total.

Jacob Salazar matched Scialanga's 154 (75-79) performance, though his success came on par-3s in which the junior tied for the ninth-lowest average (3.13) on such holes in the competition.

Three birdies over the opening seven holes allowed Michael Faringer to start well, and he ended the day with 160 (81-79) total strokes.

Host Florida Southern (285-282=567) paces the field by six strokes with Lynn (292-281=573), Saint Leo (295-284=579), and Nova Southeastern (291-288=579) following behind.

The Mocs' Adam Alvarez leads all individuals with 138 (72-66) strokes.

The third and final round begins on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. The Eagles are paired with Eckerd and Georgia College.
