BOCA RATON, Fla. - Edoardo Scialanga and Ryan Gear both fired sub-70 rounds to earn spots inside the top-10 for Embry-Riddle men's golf after the first round of the Sunshine State Conference Championship. The Eagles combined to shoot a 287 (-1) as a team to reside in eighth ahead of No. 25 Tampa (291) and Eckerd (295).

Play is being held at the par-72, 6,786-yard course at the Osprey Point Golf Club. Four top-25 teams in the most recent Clippd rankings are included in the 10-team field, such as No. 11 Nova Southeastern, No. 12 Saint Leo, No. 13 Florida Southern, and No. 25 Tampa.

No team found more success on par-5s than Embry-Riddle. The Eagles were seven under par on such holes for a tournament-low 4.65 stroke average. ERAU was also one of the most consistent programs with 58 pars, which ranked tied for third.

Scialanga continued his spectacular play to close out his first collegiate season. The freshman was six under par through 12 holes and had a three-shot lead over the entire field at that point. A team-high four birdies aided Scialanga to his third sub-70 score (68) in his last four rounds to sit in a tie for fifth. Nobody performed better on par-5s than the Rome, Italy product as he averaged a tournament-best four strokes on such holes.

Gear played flawless golf to stay close to his teammate. The first-year Eagle was bogey-free on Sunday and tallied a trio of birdies to reside inside the top ten (T-8th) with a season-low 69. Gear recorded 15 pars, which tied for the second most in the 50-player field. He also averaged 4.5 strokes on par-5 holes, tying for the fourth-best average in the competition. Gear excelled on par-3s as well as he tied for the seventh-lowest average (3.0).

Tiago Barni (74) went one under on par-5s to start his seventh tournament of the season, joining Scialanga as the only members of the Blue and Gold to compete in every tournament in 2023-24.

Jacob Salazar (76) started his round strong by shooting one under par over the opening eight holes. He was also one under par on par-5s. Michael Faringer (78) also competed for Embry-Riddle.

Two-time defending champion Barry (275) has a narrow one-shot lead on Rollins (276) while Palm Beach Atlantic and Lynn are tied for third with 282 strokes.

The Buccaneers' Miikka Makinen and Albin Ekvall lead all individuals with a 65.

Play continues on Monday with round two. The Eagles are slated to tee off at 10:40 a.m. with Eckerd.
