BOCA RATON, Fla. - A pair of Eagles are inside the top-5 as Edoardo Scialanga (T-2nd) and Ryan Gear (T-4th) are within a couple of shots of the individual leader after two rounds of the Sunshine State Conference Men's Golf Championship. The Eagles improved their second time through with a 284 in round two, which tied for the eighth-lowest round in program history, after a 287 on Sunday for a 571 total. It puts Embry-Riddle well ahead of No. 25 Tampa (582) and Eckerd (601) and only nine back of the leaders.

Play is being held at the par-72, 6,786-yard course at the Osprey Point Golf Club. Four top-25 teams in the most recent Clippd rankings are included in the 10-team field, such as No. 11 Nova Southeastern, No. 12 Saint Leo, No. 13 Florida Southern, and No. 25 Tampa.

No team found more success on par-5s than Embry-Riddle. The Eagles were 16 under par on such holes for a tournament-low 4.60 stroke average.

Scialanga (136) backed up his performance in round one with a second consecutive 68 on Monday. That marked his fourth sub-70 score in the last five rounds. The freshman started strong by going three under par on the front nine. Six birdies on the day brought Scialanga up to 10 on the tournament, which is tied for the third-most in the 50-player field. Nobody was better than him on par-5s as the Rome, Italy product averaged 4.13 strokes on such holes, the best among all competitors. He also performed well on par-4s with a 3.85 average, which tied for the ninth lowest.

Gear (69-68=137) stayed with his teammate, matching Scialanga's 68 thanks partly to a bogey-free, three-under-par back nine. The freshman thrived on par-5 holes, tying for the third-lowest average (4.38), as well as par-3s, which Gear possessed a 3.0 average on, good enough to tie for the eighth-lowest in the tournament. Additionally, Gear tied for the sixth most birdies (9) and pars (25).

Scialanga and Gear are two of only three golfers to shoot below 70 in each of the first two rounds of this year's championship.

Tiago Barni (74-73=147) was also excellent on par-5s with a 4.50 average to rank tied for fifth in that category. He came out firing by going two under par on the front nine and concluded his round with an eagle on the par-5, 510-yard hole No. 18.

Salazar (76-75=151) closed his second round strong by going one under on the back nine. Like most of his fellow Eagles, Salazar shot well on par-5s, going two below par on such holes through two rounds.

Michael Faringer (78-75=153) notched a trio of birdies on the day.

It's a three-way tie at the top between Saint Leo (284-278=562), Nova Southeastern (283-279=562) and Lynn (282-280=562) with two-time defending champion Barry (275-288=563) one shot back.

The Sharks' Michael Hay (66-67) jumped up to first on the individual leaderboard with 133 strokes, just three shots ahead of Scialanga and four in front of Gear.

Play concludes on Tuesday with round three. The Eagles are slated to tee off at 8:40 a.m. with Palm Beach Atlantic.
