DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Embry-Riddle University women's volleyball team brokes its five-match losing skid in 2004 with a 3-0 victory against Florida Memorial (30-25, 30-26, 30-23) in Florida Sun Conference?action Friday night.?
Embry-Riddle jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the first game and maintained the advantage until Florida Memorial clawed their way back into the game.? Trailing 19-13, the Lions?went on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 19-19.? The Eagles responded with four-straight points to build a comfortable lead once again 23-19 and then traded sideouts the rest of the way to prevail 30-25.??
Sue Delahanty?(New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) sparked the Eagles?in the first game connecting for kills on all six of her attempts.? Delahanty returned to the lineup after missing?last Wednesday's match at Savannah College of Art and?Design being unable to return in time after evacuating as a precaution from Hurricane Ivan.? Delahanty finished the evening with eight kills and a .538 hitting percentage before going down with an injury in the third game.
Both teams battled back and forth?in the second game?and were knotted at 13-13 before Embry-Riddle went on a 6-1?run to take a 19-14 lead.??Florida Memorial cut the gap to 23-20, but?the Eagles scored six of the next nine points to serve for the game.? However,?the Lions withstood three game?points?on kills by Mariette Knopf (Vancouver, B.C.) before Delahanty?put the game away with a kill 30-26.
Florida Memorial jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the?third, but?Embry-Riddle came alive?despite losing?Delahanty to injury and outscored?the Lions?14-4 to take a 20-14 lead.??Tola sparked the Eagles?comeback with six of her?game-high 13 kills in the third game as the Blue and Gold?prevailed 30-23 to win the match.
The Eagles resume action on?Saturday at noon hosting St. Thomas to close out the Florida Sun Conference weekend.
