St. Thomas Earns First Victory of 2004 Defeating Eagles 3-1

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The St. Thomas University women's volleyball team snapped Embry-Riddle University's four-match home winning streak dating back to last season with the Bobcats' first victory of 2004 (30-24, 26-30, 31-29, 30-20) in Florida Sun Conference action Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles received bad news before the start of the match that they would be without the services of 2003 All-FSC and All-Region player Sue Delahanty to an injury she suffered in ERU's victory against Florida Memorial on Friday night.

However, the Blue and Gold rallied together?after trailing 12-4 in the first game to St. Thomas, the Eagles closed the gap to 18-17.??St.?Thomas?was able to close out the game 30-24.

Embry-Riddle received strong play from senior Noela Tola with 19 kills and 15 digs, while sophomore Heidi Guenther?and?freshman Ashell Curtiss each responded to the challenge recording career-high kills efforts with 11 and 10, respectively.? Their efforts helped the Eagles take the?second game 30-26.

The third game was the momentum changer in the match as Embry-Riddle held a three-point lead late in the game 28-25 and had two?game points,?but St. Thomas thwarted those chances with?kills by Nicole Hubbard and Q'wando Gloudon to tie the game at 29-29.? Then?a Claudia Cruz kill put the Bobcats?ahead 30-29 and then an Eagle attack error end the game 31-29.

However, this tough?loss didn't dampen the Eagles as they jumped out to a 14-11 lead in the final game.? But once again, the Bobcats mounted a comeback and outscored ERU 14-2 to build a 25-16?advantage sparked by four?Sylvia Pozo kills?in the?run.? This lead was too much for the Eagles to?overcome and?St. Thomas closed out the match 30-20.

The Eagles have an extremely busy week on the road at Flagler in St. Augustine, Fla. on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m., then travel to Warner Southern on Thursday at 6 p.m. at South?Florida Community College and close out the week at the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish Classic on Friday and Saturday.
