ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The Florida Sun Conference leading Flagler College women's volleyball team kept its league record unblemished with a 3-0 victory (30-14, 30-21, 30-22) against Embry-Riddle University Tuesday evening.
The Eagles?jumped out to an early lead 10-7 in the first game, but the Saints not only came back to?tie the game at 11-11, but they recorded 18 straight points to build a 29-11 advantage which included 17 straight serves and four service aces by Flagler setter Carla Tagarelli?in the run.?? Tagarelli finished with eight service aces on the evening to go along with 20 assists, five digs and two block assists.
After winning the first 30-14, the Saints secured the early lead with a 10-4 advantage?highlighted by two of Florida Sun Conference?Player of the Week Melissa Bear's nine kills on the evening.? Embry-Riddle?cut the game to within three points at 20-17, but Flagler scored 10 of the next 14 points to prevail 30-21.
The Saints distributed the ball?evenly throughout the match with four players recording?six?or more kills.? Jillian Neduchal and Holli Strompolis added seven apiece and Krista McAra chipped in with six and a team-high .500 hitting percentage.
In the final game, both teams played evenly?until the middle of the game when Flagler?added to their?17-16 lead with an 8-3 run sparked by a pair of kills by McAra and a Tagarelli service ace?building a 25-19?advantage. ?Flager put things away down the stretch with two Strompolis?kills and Bear ended the match?with the Saints' 14th service ace of the match.
Embry-Riddle resumes Florida Sun Conference play in a makeup game from?a Hurricane Frances cancellation at Warner?Southern on Thursday at 7 p.m.? The game being played at South Florida Community College since Warner Southern lost their gymnasium to Hurricane Charley.? The Eagles will continue their road trip Friday and Saturday at the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish Classic.? ERU opens the?Sailfish Classic against NCAA Division II Florida Gulf Coast at 2 p.m. on Friday and faces NAIA Top?25?Jamestown (N.D.) at 4:30 p.m.
