AVON PARK, Fla. -- The 2004 Warner Southern women's volleyball team did something eight Royal senior classes haven't achieved -- they defeated Embry-Riddle University 3-2 (30-23, 25-30, 30-24, 31-29, 15-6) snapping a 17-match losing skid dating back to Oct. 27, 1995.
Tonight's victory played at South Florida Community College because Warner Southern lost its gymnasium to Hurricane Charley, was the first against the Eagles since their inaugural campaign in 1995 when the Royals defeated ERU 3-1 (16-18, 15-2, 15-13, 15-7).
The pivotal point in the match was certainly the fourth game which saw the Eagles squander a 24-16 advantage. Warner Southern went on a 10-1 run behind a pair of kills apiece from Jillian Baker and Tarasa Funk to take a 26-25 lead. Embry-Riddle retook the lead 29-28 on back-to-back kills by Dani Brazolino, but Warner prevailed on three consecutive Eagle miscues, 31-29.
After opening the final game tied at 3-3, it was all Royals down the stretch as they outscored the Eagles 12-3 to close out the match 15-6. Warner was sparked by four kills from Kathryn Kerner and three from Nikisha Arrington. Kerner and Arrington finished the match with 16 and 15 kills, respectively.
The Eagles were paced by Sue Delahanty who exploded for a season-high 22 kills, a .432 hitting percentage, 19 digs and four service aces. Noela Tola was the only other Eagle posting double-figures in kills (14) and added 15 digs.
Embry-Riddle travels to West Palm Beach, for the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish Classic on Friday, Sept. 24 which is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. However, Hurricane Jeanne may alter the schedule, we will keep you posted.
