DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- After having a 12-match winning streak snapped on Thursday evening with a loss at Flagler College, the No. 15 Savannah College of Art and Design (Ga.) women's volleyball team?bounced back to dispell Embry-Riddle University 3-0 (30-20, 30-26, 30-21) Friday evening in Florida Sun Conference action.
"Last night was a wake-up for us and it's good to bounce back from a loss like that?and come out focused," SCAD head coach Glenn Cox said. "We are always pleased to come out of the ICI center with a win because this is a tough place to play."
SCAD (16-7, 8-1 in the FSC) didn't gain control of the first game until going on a 12-3 run after being tied 6-6 early.? Junior Frida Sigurdardottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) sparked the run with four kills and finished with six in the first game.? This surge was extremely difficult for the Eagles (18-7, 4-2) to overcome especially since they hit -.045 for the game.?
ERAU did manage to trim the margin to seven late in the game at 25-18, but SCAD closed out the match from the benefit of three Eagle attack errors, forced primarily by the Bees strong block which recorded seven block assists having a hand in altering Embry-Riddle's attack.
The Eagles top hitter Janelle Marinos (Three Rivers, Calif.), who entered hitting .291 for?the season was virtually neutralized with SCAD's block.? Facing several triple blocks, Marinos managed to hit just .068 for the match with 12 kills and nine errors in 44 total attempts.
SCAD jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the second game, but the Eagles were much more competitive
battling back to the tie the game at 13-13.? ERAU took a 16-14 lead on back-to-back attack errors by the Bees.? The teams traded points back-and-forth until a 21-21 tie, when SCAD went on a 4-0 run behind two service aces from Sigurdardottir and two kills by senior setter Ally Schramer (Maple Park, Ill.) to gain the momentum leading 25-21.
Embry-Riddle cut the margin to three at 26-23 and 28-25, but couldn't string together?consecutive points to close the gap further.? SCAD won the game on one of the Eagles 10 service errors on the match.? Cristina Payne (Seattle, Wash.) led the Bees charge in the second game with seven of her match-high 13 kills hitting .286 for the game and ended the match with a .296 hitting percentage.
Sigurdardottir added 10 kills and four block assists, while Schramer posted six kills and?33 assists.? Katie Richardson (Strongsville, Ohio) and Cameron Goldsmith (Salt Lake City, Utah) finished with six and five kills, respectively.? Richardson added four block assists and Emily Bumby (Claremont, Calif.) recorded three block assists.
Once they gained the lead in the final game, the Bees held a three-point advantage for most of the game and only let ERAU come to within two points three times at 14-12, 15-13 and 17-15. Leading 20-17, SCAD went on a 10-4 run to end the match behind two kills and two service aces by Payne.
SCAD returns to action on the road Oct. 13-14 when they travel to Northwood (Fla.) and Palm Beach
Atlantic (Fla.), while the Eagles also travel next weekend at Webber International (Fla.) and Warner
Southern (Fla.) Oct. 13-14.
