Women's Soccer Opens Conference Play With 6-2 Win Over Warner Southern

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Elina Johansson netted four goals in the second half of play to lead the Embry-Riddle women's soccer team to a 6-2 win over Warner Southern (3-4, 0-4), Sunday at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium. The win was the first in The Sun Conference action for the Eagles who are now 3-3 on the year and 1-0 in league play.

The Embry-Riddle women dominated the offense from the first whistle and outshot the Royals 17-7 in the first half alone. The Eagles had a number of chances to score but saw the ball either sail wide of the target or get scooped up by Royals' netminder Kirsten Mossing, resulting in only two Eagle goals at the half.

The Eagles took the lead in the 10th minute when Cecilie Henriksen rifled a shot from just outside the box that beat Mossing low.

Lindsey Evans extended the lead in the 19th minute when she collected the ball at the top of the box, dribbled around a pair of defenders and slotted a shot through Mossing's legs to make the score 2-0.

With just 15 seconds remaining in the first half, the Royals won a free kick just outside the 18 yard box. Shalia Tamayo lifted the ball into the box and Tara Fadenrecht headed the ball into the upper netting to pull Warner Southern within one.

After knocking on the door on several occasions in the first half, Elina Johansson finally got on the scoreboard 16 minutes into the second frame. After receiving the ball about 25 yards from the midfield line, Johansson raced down the right flank into the box and drilled her seventh goal of 2008 into the far side netting to make the score 3-1.

Less than two minutes later Johansson struck again. After receiving the ball on the right side of the box, she rocketed another shot into the netting on the opposite side to extend the lead to 4-1.

With just over 15 minutes left to play, the Eagle defense attempted to head a ball out of the box, but it fell right to Fadenrecht who chipped the ball over Brelyn Bingham, who was off her line for the Royals' second goal of the game.

Johansson's third and fourth goals came within two minutes of each other and both involved long runs down the field by the sophomore. The first came from the right side of the field where she had already found success. The second came after a long clearance out of the back for the Eagles that got all the way to Johansson in the center circle and Johansson used her speed to elude Warner Southern's last defender, eventually dribbled around the keeper and tapped in her last goal of the game to seal the win.

The Eagles return to action at 7 p.m. on Friday when they host conference foe Savannah College of Art and Design at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
