DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Northwood women's soccer team got four goals from Helen Lynskey en route to a 5-2 victory over Embry-Riddle, Friday at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium. With the win, Northwood, ranked No. 22 in the NAIA, improve to 4-1-1 overall and 1-0 in The Sun Conference, while the 10th-ranked Eagles move to 5-2-1 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Northwood got on the board early in the contest as Lynskey netted her first goal of the night just 1:33 into the contest. After Northwood sent the ball into the box, the Eagles cleared it only as far as Lynskey and the 2010 Sun Conference Player of the Year's low strike near post found the back of the net to put the Seahawks up 1-0.
As the half progressed, both teams tried to get into a rhythm as what began as a drizzle turned into a downpour midway through the half. Despite the wet conditions, the Eagles still managed to score the equalizer at the 22:26 mark.
Valerie Obita picked a ball played forward by the ERAU defense just over the midfield stripe in the Northwood half of the field. The sophomore's first touch allowed her to beat one marker and she used her speed and skill on the ball to sprint more than 50 yards down the field, eluding defenders along the way, before releasing shot that went by Northwood keeper Matilda Ojaniemi and rippled the back of the net to draw the Eagles level at 1-1.
Lynskey reclaimed the lead for the Seahawks nine minutes into the second half and took advantage of a defensive miscue by the Eagles to score her third goal of the evening and extend the Northwood lead to 3-1 with 34 minutes remaining in the match.
At the 73:53 mark,
Martine Olsen slipped a pass through the legs of a Northwood defender to Obita on the run. Obita maneuvered past a pair of defenders and got just enough on the ball to touch it past Ojaniemi to pull the Eagles within one.
Any momentum that the Eagles had after their second score quickly swung the other way, when Julia Haskell's shot went into the upper right corner of the goal to give Northwood back its two-goal advantage less than four minutes later. Lynskey sealed the win with her fourth goal in the 80th minute to give Northwood its first conference win of the year.
The Eagles return to the pitch at 1 p.m. on Sunday when they host conference opponent Johnson & Wales at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
