Eagles Notch First Conference Win With 5-0 Shutout of Wildcats

Holly Sandon scored her first collegiate goal against Johnson & Wales
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team got its first Sun Conference win of the 2011 campaign with a 5-0 win over Johnson & Wales (Fla.), Sunday afternoon at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium. The Eagles, ranked 10th in the latest NAIA national poll are now 6-2-1 on the year and 1-1 in league play, while the Wildcats are 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Five different players scored for ERAU as the Eagles maintained their unbeaten record against the Wildcats in three meetings. Martine Olsen and Krizzy Menez led the way for the Blue and Gold with a combined total of six points as each player registered a goal and an assist. Newcomers Holly Sandon and Charlotte Edeland each recorded the first goal of their collegiate careers and Cecilie Henriksen rounded out the goal-scorers with her second-half strike.

It took the Eagles just two minutes and 23 seconds to get their first goal of the afternoon as Olsen tapped in Valerie Obita's cross from the left side for her team-best 10th goal of the season.

Embry-Riddle continued to pressure the Johnson & Wales defense and with 18 minutes left in the first frame, the persistence paid off. Sandon, who came on as a sub midway through the first half took a throw-in on the left side and after getting the ball back close to where she inbounded the ball, Sandon launched a shot from about 25 yards out that JWU goalkeeper Darcilyn Butala could not hold on to, making the score 2-0.

Although they outshot the Wildcats 13-0 in the first half, the Eagles, who experimented with a few line-up changes throughout the contest, were unable to find the back of the net again and went into the halftime break with the two-goal lead.

Coming out of the intermission, the Eagles continued to dominate the possession and just under five minutes into the second half, they converted that possession into a goal. Ange Durston-Ryan collected the ball on the left side and whipped in a cross that was headed home by Menez to make the score 3-0.

Menez started the play that led to the Eagles' fourth goal in the 54th minute. The junior played the ball out to Madeleine Edbom on the right and Edbom's cross made its way to Olsen at the top of the box. Rather than take the shot herself, Olsen opted to make a short, square pass to Henriksen and the senior rifled a shot into the upper right corner to record her third goal of the year.

The final goal of the afternoon came off Edeland's foot at the 65:11 mark. Edeland was more involved in the Eagles' attack in the second half and after launching two shots that just missed the mark, the freshman netted the first goal of her collegiate career, heading home a cross from Menez to seal the 5-0 win.

Lauren Gallant and Dina Roper split time between the pipes for the Eagles, but neither goalkeeper was tested as the Eagle defense prevented Johnson & Wales from getting off a shot. Butala finished with eight saves in the Wildcat effort.

The Eagles return to conference play at 4 p.m. on Saturday when they travel to Miami to take on St. Thomas.
