DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Embry-Riddle won their third straight game, and collected double-digit hits for the third consecutive contest, coming away with an 11-4 victory over visiting Northwood (Fla.) on Friday night in Sun Conference action. The Eagles move into first-place in the league standings with a half-game lead, improving to 9-2 in The Sun Conference and 22-7 overall. The Seahawks drop to 11-12 overall and 2-10 in the conference.
After giving up a three-run homer in the first inning, Embry-Riddle starting pitcher
Chad Modomo was magnificent over the next seven frames, facing the minimum 21 batters, and surrendering just one hit after the first inning.
The Seahawks had runners at first and second with two outs after a pair of nice defensive plays by the Eagles cut down runners at third and home earlier in the inning, but Keneth Rivero provided the only bright spot for NU on the evening when he homered to left field to give Northwood an early 3-0 lead.
ERAU scratched across a run in the bottom of the first after
Frankie Arias walked, stole second and moved to third on a
Jeff Lemon groundout. Arias scored on a passed ball by Seahawk catcher, Angel Garcia.
The Eagles knotted the score at 3-3 in the second, thanks to one hit and a Seahawk error.
Ian MacGeorge was hit by a pitch to start the inning before
Jordan Romero doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third with no outs. A wild pitch scored MacGeorge and Romero touched home when Northwood's right fielder dropped an easy fly ball that would have been the third and final out of the frame.
Modomo continued to put zeroes on the scoreboard, and his offense rewarded him with a three-run fourth, taking a 6-3 lead, one that neither Modomo nor the Eagles would look back from.
All three of the runs in the fourth proved to be unearned after three Seahawk errors in the inning. Arias collected two of his three RBIs with a single through the right side that scored both Romero and
Adam Cellini's courtesy runner,
Tyler Robbins. Lemon brought in
Greg Smith with a single to right field for the sixth Eagle run of the evening.
The Blue and Gold put the game out of reach in the sixth, scoring four runs on four hits to balloon their lead to 10-3. Smith singled, stole second and moved to third on a ground ball before scoring on Lemon's single up the middle. Lemon and
Chris Page both came home on MacGeorge's fourth home run of the season, this one coming off of Seahawks' starter Jordan Rawlyk.
ERAU scored once more in the seventh and the Seahawks were able to plate a single run in the ninth off of Eagle reliever Antwan Brown to account for the 11-4 final.
Modomo (W, 6-2) pitched eight innings, giving up three runs on four hits while striking out four on 94 pitches.
Arias was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a run scored, while MacGeorge went 1-for-4 with three RBIs, all on his homer. Lemon finished 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.
The Eagles and Seahawks will tangle in a doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, Mar. 17, beginning at 1 p.m. at Sliwa Stadium.
