Josefine Strom earned a hard-fought two-set win to score the clincher against the Huskies
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The third-ranked Embry-Riddle women's tennis team swept doubles and earned wins in five of their six singles matches to defeat NCAA Division I Northern Illinois 6-1, Friday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles are now 11-1 on the year, while the Huskies are 7-5 overall.
Playing according NCAA I rules where the three doubles matches count as one decision, the Eagles quickly grabbed the doubles point as NAIA No. 10
Ekaterina Kamendova and
Rocio Frej Vitalle handled Nelle Youel and Arantza de la Torre at No. 2 and sixth-ranked
Yi Ching Chen and
Josefine Strom topped Sara McLaughlin and Emily Rogers by the same margin at the top spot. Down 4-1 at No. 3 doubles, the 22nd-ranked duo of
Kristina Marova and
Paola Montero roared back to take the match 8-6 and seal the doubles sweep.
For the second straight match, Chen was the first to finish her singles contest at the top position, easily dispatching McLaughin 6-1, 6-0. Marova was next off the court with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Rogers at court four. The Huskies got a point back at the second spot where Youel downed Frej Vitalle (6-1, 6-3).
The Eagles won the first set in the three remaining matches, but when both Kamendova and Montero fell behind in the second set, their teammates got behind Strom on court four who held a slim 5-4 advantage in the second after winning the first 6-3. Malkin pulled level at 5-5 and again at 6-6, leading to a tiebreaker to decide the set. Strom remained focused and held off a determined Malkin to clinch the Eagle win with a 10-8 tiebreak victory.
Montero won five straight games and erased a 4-1 deficit in the second set to win her match against McDonald at the sixth spot 6-1, 6-4 and Kamendova won a three-setter (7-5, 6-3, 10-4) at No. 3 to close out the match.
The Eagles will be back in action at 1 p.m. on Monday to play the first of three home matches in three days. Monday's opponent will be Oklahoma Baptist.
