No. 3 Blue Raiders Edge No. 4 Eagles 2-1

Krizzy Menez scored the Eagles' only goal against Lindsey Wilson

PORTLAND, Ore. – The fourth-ranked Embry-Riddle women's soccer team suffered a tough loss in the opening game of the Cavalier Cup hosted by Concordia (Ore.) at Tuominen Yard on Friday. Friday's game was a battle between two of the top five teams in the NAIA and in the end it was third-ranked Lindsey Wilson that was able to come away with a 2-1 win. The victory was the first of the year for the Blue Raiders who move to 1-0-1 with the victory, while the Eagles fall to 1-2.

The Blue Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. ERAU netminder Lauren Gallant dove to her right and got her finger tips on Laerke Michaelsen's low shot, but the ball slipped past Gallant, giving the Blue Raiders the advantage.

The Blue Raiders continued to attack the Eagle goal, but Gallant turned back their efforts with three big saves and the score remained 1-0 at the half.

The Eagles stepped up the pressure in the second half and in the 57th minute Allison Schultz came dangerously close to recording the equalizer as her header went just wide of the right post.

At the 68:57 mark, the Eagles won a throw-in on the left side and got the ball into Kristin Sverrisdottir. The freshman dribbled past three Lindsey Wilson defenders and launched a shot that was stopped by Loren Cerafice, but the Blue Raider goalkeeper could not hold onto the ball and Krizzy Menez pounced on the rebound and stuck the ball in the upper netting to tie the score.

Over the next 17 minutes, both teams fought to maintain possession and set up the go-ahead goal. With 3:50 remaining in regulation, Mia Perrson was tripped inside the 18-yard box, sending Elisha Fry to the penalty spot. Fry was successful on her first penalty kick of the season as her shot to the lower left corner won the game for Lindsey Wilson.

The Eagles will conclude play in the Cavalier Cup at noon (PST) on Sunday when the face 12th-ranked Hastings (Neb.).
