ABOUT THE EAGLES
The top-ranked Eagles suffered their first conference loss of the season, dropping a tough 3-2 overtime decision to fifth-ranked Northwood on Friday evening.
Â
The Eagles are 9-2-1 overall and 4-1 in league play. The Eagles have notched wins against three nationally ranked opponents, including defending national champion and second-ranked Lindsey Wilson, No. 4 Concordia and No. 10 William Carey.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
The fifth-ranked Northwood women's soccer team got two goals from Helen Lynskey in a 3-2 overtime victory over top-ranked Embry-Riddle (8-1-2, 4-1), Friday at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
Â
The first half saw a back-and-forth battle with Northwood holding a 4-3 edge in shots, but it was the Eagles who broke through for the first score of the contest.
The play started with
Katherine Ebbs' diving play to save ball from going out of bounds. She managed to get it to
Martine Olsen who played a quick ball to
Valerie Obita streaking down the left side and the ERAU senior hit a low cross toward the far post where Andrea Froshaug was on hand to tap in her fifth goal of the season in 22nd minute.
In the 40th minute, Froshaug was injured as a result of a Northwood foul that sidelined her for the remainder of the contest. The Eagles maintained the one-goal advantage heading into the halftime break, but felt Froshaug's absence as Northwood had the better of the possession to start the second half.
With just over 21 minutes left in the second half, the Seahawks were awarded a free kick. Maria Tornqvist took the free kick from about 25 yards outside the penalty area and lofted a ball into the box where Lynskey headed it just out of ERAU goalkeeper's
Olivia Lynch's reach to pull Northwood level.
The score remained tied until the 79:23 mark when the Eagles pulled ahead once again. A long throw by
Dana Robins landed inside the penalty area where Olsen managed to flick it into the danger zone inside the six-yard box. A pair of Northwood defenders went to ground in an attempt to clear it, but the ball made its way to Obita and the senior tucked a shot into the bottom of the net to reclaim the Eagle lead.
As the clock ran down, it appeared the Eagles would take the win, but with 1:13 left on the clock, the Seahawks equalized again as a missed Eagle clearance on a cross by Louise Anderson ended up in the Eagle net. The own goal made the score 2-2 and sent the game into extra time.
With just under three minutes remaining in the first overtime period, the Seahawks were awarded another free kick, very close to the spot that led to their first goal. This time Lynskey took the set piece herself and buried a shot in the upper right corner to give Northwood the win.

Â
THE LAST TIME THEY MET
The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team used a stellar second half to beat Johnson & Wales 3-0 on Sept. 23, 2012.
Â
After a two-hour weather delay, the Eagles came out ready to play and got the first goal of the day off the boot of
Martine Olsen in the third minute. The Eagles had an opportunity to add to their tally in the 38
th minute but
Valerie Obita's shot went just wide of the mark and the score remained 1-0 at the half.
Â
The second half saw the Eagles score two goals in a two-minute span. The first came from Obita who netted her 11
th goal of the season when she tapped home a pass from
Helena Hansson. The third goal of the game was the eighth on the season for Olsen who received a great cross from
Ange Durston-Ryan after she beat her defender down the left side and found Olsen open in front of the net.
Â
The Eagle defense was dominant in the second half, not allowing a single Johnson & Wales shot in the frame. The Eagles tallied 22 shots in all, including seven on goal, while the Wildcats had just two shots, none of which were on frame.
Â
RAISING THE BAR
Embry-Riddle senior
Martine Olsen worked her way into the top three in four of the Eagles' all-time offensive categories last season. She came into the 2013 season as the Eagles' all-time leader in game-winners (19) and with a goal against Kansas Wesleyan (Sept. 13) she joined Elina Johansson at the top of the Eagles career scoring list with 64 goals.
Â
Valerie Obita is also climbing the offensive charts. With 18 points on six goals and six assists, the senior ranks third behind Johansson and Olsen in points (142) and goals (60) and is third in game-winners (15).
