Obita Scores Five as @ERAUWSoccer Blanks Wildcats 11-0

Valerie Obita matched the ERAU single-game scoring record (5) against JWU

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Embry-Riddle seniors Valerie Obita and Martine Olsen further established themselves on the list of the ERAU women's soccer's best as both posted program records in an 11-0 win over Johnson & Wales, Sunday at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Complex. Obita tied the ERAU single-game scoring record with five goals, while Olsen's only goal of the afternoon made her the Eagles' career leader in goals (65).

With the win, the top-ranked Eagles moved to 10-2-1 overall and 5-1 in Sun Conference play.

"It's no secret that our team was angry about Friday night's outcome," ERAU Head Coach Samantha Bohon said. "We felt like we let that one get away a little bit, so we wanted to make sure we came out today sharp and focused, especially in the final third, and I thought we did that. I'm happy that we got a pretty decisive win; the goals were actually quality goals so I'm happy to see that we could put 11 on the board. That's more than I usually would allow our team to score, but I felt like today we needed a little bit of a response."

The Eagles were the dominant for the entire match. Offensively, ERAU recorded 23 shots, 16 of which were on frame, and took nine corner kicks, converting three of those set pieces into goals. Defensively, the Eagles allowed just one shot and forced the Wildcats to play the majority of the game in their own half.

In the ninth minute, Obita's shot seemed destined for the back of the net, but JWU goalkeeper Caily Rizzo managed to get a hand to the ball at the last second and pushed it over the touch line for an Eagle corner. Katherine Ebbs took the set piece and lifted a ball into the box where Olsen rose above the JWU defense and headed home her seventh goal of the year to put the Eagles up 1-0. With that goal, Olsen set the ERAU career record for goals scored.

At the 23:50 mark, Obita matched Olsen's season scoring output as she ran on to a through ball played by Olsen and slipped a shot through the Rizzo's legs to make the score 2-0.

The Eagles' third goal was the result of their seventh corner of the half and this time it was Isabelle Haaranen who headed home an Ebbs corner to make the score 3-0.

Olsen and Obita combined for the Eagles' next goal in the 29th minute to cap the scoring in the first half with the Eagles leading 4-0.

Two minutes into the second half, Obita added to her team-leading tally. Gudrun Johnson collected a Janina Helwig throw-in, dribbled around three Wildcat defenders and sent in a low cross to Obita on the near post where the senior tapped in her ninth goal of the season to make the score 5-0.

In the 64th minute, Obita matched the Eagles' single-game scoring record, netting the Eagles' third goal via corner kick, which was taken by Kristin Sverissdottir, to widen the gap to 6-0. The Eagles got a goal from Johnson in the 73rd minute and another from Ebb in the 75th, and Gabriela Casariego added two late in the contest to seal the Eagle win.

The Eagles resume conference play on Thursday when they travel to Ave Maria. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
