ABOUT THE EAGLES
The Eagles are ranked fourth nationally and top The Sun Conference's North Division with a 5-1 league record.
LAST TIME OUT
In their last game, the Eagles got record-setting performances from
Martine Olsen and
Valerie Obita on the way to an 11-0 shutout of league foe Johnson & Wales. Obita tied the ERAU single-game scoring record with five goals, and Olsen's only goal of the afternoon tied her with Obita as the Eagles' career leaders in goals (65).
Â
The Eagles were the dominant team for the entire match. Offensively, ERAU recorded 23 shots, 16 of which were on frame, and took nine corner kicks, converting three of those set pieces into goals. Defensively, the Eagles allowed just one shot and forced the Wildcats to play the majority of the game in their own half.
Â
In the ninth minute, Obita's shot seemed destined for the back of the net, but JWU goalkeeper Caily Rizzo managed to get a hand to the ball at the last second and pushed it over the touch line for an Eagle corner.
Katherine Ebbs took the set piece and lifted a ball into the box where Olsen rose above the JWU defense and headed home her seventh goal of the year to put the Eagles up 1-0. With that goal, Olsen set the ERAU career record for goals scored.
Â
At the 23:50 mark, Obita matched Olsen's season scoring output as she ran on to a through ball played by Olsen and slipped a shot through the Rizzo's legs to make the score 2-0.
Â
The Eagles' third goal was the result of their seventh corner of the half and this time it was
Isabelle Haaranen who headed home an Ebbs corner to make the score 3-0.
Â
Olsen and Obita combined for the Eagles' next goal in the 29th minute to cap the scoring in the first half with the Eagles leading 4-0.
Â
Two minutes into the second half, Obita added to her team-leading tally.
Gudrun Johnson collected a
Janina Helwig throw-in, dribbled around three Wildcat defenders and sent in a low cross to Obita on the near post where the senior tapped in her ninth goal of the season to make the score 5-0.
Â
In the 64th minute, Obita matched the Eagles' single-game scoring record, netting the Eagles' third goal via corner kick, which was taken by Kristin Sverissdottir, to widen the gap to 6-0. The Eagles got a goal from Johnson in the 73rd minute and another from Ebb in the 75th, and
Gabriela Casariego added two late in the contest to seal the Eagle win.
ABOUT THE GYRENES
Frank Frostino returned to Ave Maria as the women's soccer head coach in 2013. He first managed the program in the 2010 and 2011 seasons and in his first season back, he has guided the Lady Gyrenes to a 5-6-1 overall record and a 1-4 mark in league play. Their last time out saw AMU suffer a 7-0 loss to 14th-ranked St. Thomas
Offensively, the Lady Gyrenes are led by Victoria Johnson who has 15 goals and five assists on the year. Anne Bateman has added 10 goals and seven assists, while Francesca singleton has led AMU between the pipes with a 3.73 goals against average and 80 saves.
THE ERAU-AMU SERIES
Embry-Riddle leads the all-time series against Johnson & Wales 3-0. In the three meetings between the two teams, the Eagles have outscored the Lady Gyrenes 25-1
THE LAST TIME THEY MET
Sophomore
Martine Olsen recorded her first hat trick of the 2011 season to lead the 14th-ranked Embry-Riddle women's soccer team to a 6-0 victory over Ave Maria (at Ave Maria's home field on Oct. 13, 2011.
The Eagles got the scoring started early, tallying the first goal of the match in the second minute of play.
Valerie Obita started the play at midfield and delivered a pass to Cecilie Henriksen on the left side. Henriksen's cross into the box found Olsen who headed the ball past AMU starting keeper Jackie Gonzalez to make the score 1-0.
The next goal came from Obita's boot as the sophomore's shot was too much for Gonzalez to handle and went into the upper left corner to make the score 2-0.
Olsen and Obita each scored another goal in the first 45 minutes to extend the Eagle advantage to 4-0 at the half.
Coming out of the break, the Eagles continued to control the possession and in the 53rd minute, they found the back of the net once again. The Blue and Gold took the ball into the box where it was booted out by the last AMU defender.
Tova Torstensson cleaned up the clearance and rifled a shot into the lower right corner for her first goal of the season, which extended the Eagle advantage to 5-0.
Olsen finished a pass from
Gabriela Casariego in the 66th minute to complete the hat trick and close out the win.
RAISING THE BAR
Martine Olsen and
Valerie Obita are tied as the Eagles' all-time career scoring leaders. A month to the day after she tied Elina Johansson ((2007-10), Olsen claimed the ERAU goal scoring record for herself with a goal against Johnson & Wales. In that game, Obita matched Johansson's single-game scoring record with a five-goal output and those five goals brought Obita level with Olsen at the top of ERAU's all-time scoring charts.
Olsen (155) and Obita (152) rank second and third, respectively behind Johansson in career points.
