AT A GLANCE
Friday and Saturday will renew what has become one of the better rivalries in The Sun Conference when the seventh-ranked Embry-Riddle Eagles travel north to South Carolina to take on the 21st-ranked University of South Carolina Beaufort Sand Sharks in an early-season Sun Conference series. The two teams met five times in 2012 with the Sand Sharks holding a slight 3-2 advantage, but taking the most important of the meetings at the 2012 Avista-NAIA World Series, eliminating the Eagles and ending their season.

The Eagles are 4-2 against the Sand Sharks in Hardeeville, but have lost both series openers (2010 and 2011), rebounding to win both sets of Saturday doubleheaders.

The Sand Sharks lost all but one starting positiong player from their record-setting 2012 squad, a team that advanced to the Avista-NAIA World Series for the first time in program history, and return a handful of pitchers, including one weekend starter in Kyle McCullough.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Of the previous 16 meetings between the Blue and Gold and USCB, only one contest has been decided by one run (a 7-6 USCB victory in 2011), with the majority of games being decided by four or more runs. If a team can manage to score runs consistently in the series, history would seem to indicate that team would come away the majority of the wins.

While the Sand Sharks return just one starting pitcher from last season, the Eagles bring back a pair of pretty good ones in Chad Modomo and Kevin Maloney. The pair were last year's Saturday starters but will probably be thrown on different days with Maloney going in Friday's opener and Modomo expected to start the first game on Saturday.

SCOUTING USCB
Bryan Lewallyn took over for Rick Sofield before the start of last season, and as the interim coach, led the Sand Sharks to their best season since the program's inception, finishing second in The Sun Conference and qualifying for the NAIA National Championship Opening Round. USCB went on to win the Hardeeville Bracket of the Opening Round and took its first trip to Lewiston, Idaho for the World Series.

The Sand Sharks will rely on the heart of their lineup to do the most damage to opposing pitchers as Kyle Thompson, Blake Cilwick and Erik Armstrong (batting 2-3-4) have combined for 18 hits, 23 RBIs and have scored 15 runs. Armstrong was a second team All-Sun Conference infielder as a sophomore and ranks second in the league with 11 RBIs.

LAST GAMES: Blue and Gold Completes Sweep of Fire with Pair of Saturday Wins (Feb. 9, 2013)
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The NAIA No. 7 Embry-Riddle Eagles completed a three-game sweep of Sun Conference foe Southeastern on Saturday with a pair of close victories over the Fire, 4-3 and 3-1. The Eagles (6-1, 3-0) walked off for the second time in their young season in the day's opener before riding the left arm of sophomore Stetson Nelson in the series finale to send the Fire (4-7, 0-3) to their third consecutive loss.

PATIENCE REWARDED
Junior Jordan Johnson, in his third season with the Eagles, has broken out in the early-going of 2013, leading the team with a .381 batting average in seven games, striking for eight hits in 21 at-bats. In his first two seasons, Johnson collected a total of 14 at-bats, recording one hit, and was used primarily in 2012 as a courtesy/pinch runner.

300 WINS IN A LITTLE OVER SEVEN SEASONS
Randy Stegall earned his 300th career win when the Eagles finished a sweep of Georgetown to begin the season on Feb. 1, doing so in his 426th game. Comparitively, former Eagle skipper Greg Guilliams recorded his 300th career win in 443 games and Embry-Riddle basketball coach Steve Ridder got his 300th win after his 427th game.

FOURTH AND SEVENTH INNING GOOSE EGGS
The Eagles have yet to plate a run in the fourth or seventh innings in 2013, scoring 29 in the other seven frames. Ironically, the fourth inning was the best inning for the Blue and Gold last season as the Eagles scored 79 times over the course of 61 games, an average of 1.3 runs per fourth inning.

QUARTER CENTURY OF EAGLE BASEBALL
The 2013 season marks the 25th edition of Eagle baseball and Embry-Riddle athletics overall. The basketball, baseball, men's tennis and men's golf programs began in the 1988-89 academic year and were the foundation the rest of the department was built upon.

Embry-Riddle is 933-400-1 in 25 seasons, capturing 13 conference regular season titles, four conference tournament titles, seven regional crowns, claiming 28 NAIA All-America honors, 35 Honorable Mention All-American honors and advancing to the NAIA World Series 11 times (T-4th most in NAIA history).
