DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –The sixth-ranked Embry-Riddle women's tennis team completed a sweep in doubles play en route to a 6-3 victory over Northwood in Sun Conference action, Wednesday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles notched their second conference win of the season to improve to 2-0 in league play and 2-4 overall, while Northwood slips to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
The Eagles picked up their first point when
Kristina Marova and
Hui-I Huang downed Justyna Wojcik and Adelaide Wood 8-2 at the No. 1 spot. Next off the court was the freshman tandem of
Ana Gonzalez-Hoy and
Meena Bennett who topped Julia Ferraz and Melanie Snowberger 8-5.
The match at No. 2 doubles lasted an hour and a half. In the end, it was ERAU's
Paola Montero and
Giovanna Tomiotto who held off Valentina Souki and Livia Toth, winning 9-8 with a 7-5 decision in the tiebreaker to put the Blue and Gold up 3-0 heading into singles.
Bennett was the first to finish her singles match, dispatching Snowberger 6-2, 6-1 at the sixth spot. The Seahawks managed to get two points back when Wojcik topped Marova 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 and Souki bested Huang 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2.
At No. 3 singles, Montero took the first set 6-4 and followed with a 6-4 win in the second to score the clincher for the Eagles. Gonzalez-Hoy closed out the scoring with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 win over Ferraz and Toth recorded the Seahawks' last point by edging Tomiotto 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 on court four.
The Eagles will be back in action on April 28 when they host Ave Maria at the Crotty Tennis Complex. That Sun Conference match is slated for 3:30 p.m.
