MONTGOMERY, Ala. – After not scoring in any of their last four games, the Embry-Riddle softball team had its highest run production in over a week, but it was not enough to get by eighth-ranked Auburn Montgomery as the Warhawks (21-1) bested the visiting Eagles 16-8 in the first game and 7-3 in the second game of a Monday doubleheader at the AUM Softball Complex.
Sarah Huey led all Eagle hitters, going 6-for-7 in both games combined with two RBI and four runs scored.
Samantha Smith,
Alex Wood and
Dee Espinosa had two hits each, with Espinosa tallying five RBI.
In the opening game, the Eagles got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Huey led off the inning with a single down the left field line, stole second and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give ERAU a 1-0 lead.
AUM answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs courtesy of a three-run homer by Kayla Hale.
In the bottom of the second,
Melanie Lee drew a walk, moved to second on a passed ball and a single to right by
Samantha Smith put runners on the corners for ERAU. Huey's double to left field brought both runners across for a 4-3 Eagle advantage, but once again the Warhawks had an answer, scoring twice in the bottom of the inning to go up by one (5-4).
The top half of the fourth frame saw the Eagles tally five runs on four hits.
Samantha Smith got things started with a walk and back-to-back singles by Wood and Huey loaded the bases for
Savannah Smith who delivered a single to score her namesake, bringing Espinosa to the plate. Espinosa looked at one pitch before taking reliever Taylor Powell's second offering over the left field fence for the second grand slam of her college career, putting the Eagles back on top by three (8-5).
The Warhawks were not to be outdone and they plated four runs in the fourth, five in the fifth and two in the sixth to secure the win.
Lee (0-3) struck out three and walked four in the loss, while Powell improved to 7-0 on the year with two strikeouts in two innings of relief.
The second game saw the Eagles take a first-inning lead again as
Haleigh Lewis singled home Huey who reached on an infield single.
ERAU starting pitcher
Robi Zimmerman kept AUM off the scoreboard in the first but three hits and an error allowed the home team to take the lead with four runs in the second.
Following a scoreless third, the Eagles pulled within one run with a two-run fifth. After belting a single up the middle, Wood moved up on a Huey single and a wild pitch and scored when AUM catcher was unable to hold on to a pitch from Kale. The miscues by the AUM pitcher and catcher allowed Huey to get to third and she came across to score on Espinosa's sacrifice bunt to make the score 4-3.
In the bottom of the fifth, three hits and a pair of Eagle errors helped AUM extend its lead by three runs, but neither team was given an opportunity to add to its tally as but bad weather halted the contest in the fifth inning.
Zimmerman (2-7) took the loss, while Hale improved to 5-1 with the win for AUM.
The Eagles will play their first ever conference game on Friday when they host Southeastern in a doubleheader slated for 3 p.m. at the Embry-Riddle softball stadium.
