Bullpen Nearly Perfect as No. 7 Eagles Squeak by Clarke, 3-2

Lindheim goes 2-for-4, allowed two runs over three innings in first collegiate start
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The seventh-ranked Embry-Riddle baseball team improved to 6-2 in one-run games in 2013 as it edged out Clarke University, 3-2, on Tuesday night at Sliwa Stadium. With the win the Eagles improve to 14-3 on the season while the Crusaders fall to 5-2 on the year.

Kevin Lindheim made his first collegiate start for the Eagles and pitched admirably, before giving way to the bullpen that was nearly perfect, allowing just four hits to nail down the victory.

Lindheim had traffic on the bases every inning, but his defense bailed him out in both the first and second inning. It was a heads up play in the first inning by ERAU shortstop Tyler Robbins who fielded a ball in the hole and instead of throwing to first, alertly fired to third to catch Sergio Cruz wide of the bag to end the inning.

In the second, catcher Neil Lawhorn gunned down Luis Reyes attempting to steal second, in a first and third one out situation, to aid Linheim. However, the defense couldn't help the 6-1 junior in the third as Johnny Kruick took a 3-2 pitch back up the middle for a two-out, two-run single to take the early 2-0 lead, ending the night for Lindheim.

The Blue and Gold got a run back in the bottom of the third as Jordan Johnson drove in Tyler Robbins who tripled with one out in the inning to cut the lead to 2-1.

The offense backed reliever Stetson Nelson, scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth, aided by two defensive miscues by the Crusaders shortstop. Lawhorn led off the inning with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a single by Dillon Ennis, later scoring as Ennis stole second and the shortstop booted the ball and then airmailed the catcher, tying the game at two. Two batters later, Jeff Lemon put the Eagles ahead for good as he singled to left center, scoring Ennis, giving the Blue and Gold a 3-2 lead.

Lindheim allowed two runs on six hits in three innings of work before giving way to the bullpen. Nelson (three innings pitched) combined with Kevin Maloney (one inning), Benjamin-Antwan Brown (one inning) and closer Ronnie Lozada (one inning) for six innings of scoreless ball, striking out seven to close out the win.

Nelson (4-1) got his team leading fourth win while Lozada recorded his third save of the season.

Johnson, Lemon and Lindheim each finished 2-for-4 with Johnson and Lemon each recording an RBI. Lindheim extended his hit streak to nine games, while Lemon recorded his sixth multi-hit game of the season.

The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday, Mar. 7 as they host a two-team doubleheader, playing Bethel (Tenn.) at 4 p.m. and Aquinas at 7 p.m.
