Four ERAU Student-Athletes Named to Men’s Tennis All-America Roster

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Members of the national champion Embry-Riddle men's tennis team continued to receive recognition as four individuals were named to the NAIA All-America team, which was released on Monday. Deni Zmak, Patrick Besch and Chris Freeman all garnered first team honors, while Anthony Grasso was named to the second team.

Freeman (Costa Mesa, Calif.) closed out an exceptional career at Embry-Riddle as a three-time first team All-America selection. A two-time Sun Conference Player of the Year, he was a first team All-Conference selection in 2013, posting a 22-5 overall singles record, playing the majority his dual matches at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. Also recognized for his work in the classroom with NAIA All-America Scholar Athlete, Academic All-Conference and Capital One Academic All-District honors, Freeman graduated from Embry-Riddle with a 3.788 GPA in Aeronautical Science and is ranked 13th in the ITA/NAIA national rankings.

Besch became only the third ERAU men's tennis player to capture an ITA/NAIA national singles championship after claiming the title in the fall. Hampered by injury throughout the regular season, the Mainz, Germany native returned to the lineup in the postseason and closed out his junior campaign at 10-2 in singles and 14-4 in doubles. Like Freeman, Besch also garnered academic accolades for his 3.72 GPA in Business Administration and was a finalist for the ITA/NAIA Arthur Ashe Award.

Zmak (Pula, Croatia) joined the Eagle roster in the spring and made an immediate impact on the lineup, going 20-1 on the year in singles, including a perfect 20-0 against NAIA opponents. The 2013 Sun Conference Player of the Year, third-ranked Zmak was also the recipient of the Ward-Ballinger award presented to the individual at the national tournament who exhibited outstanding play sportsmanship and leadership. His biggest win of the season came in the title match of the NAIA National Championship when he won a nail biting three-setter to clinch the Eagles' first-ever national championship. He was 19-5 overall in doubles play and he and Freeman topped the ITA/NAIA national doubles rankings, closing out the season at 12-2.

Like Zmak, Grasso also joined the Eagle lineup as a freshman in the spring. He turned a perfect 6-0 ledger to earn first team All-Conference honors and closed out the year at 17-4 in singles. Grasso also had an impressive performance in the national championship match as his 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win in singles pulled the Eagles level with Auburn Montgomery.

The quartet was instrumental in leading the Eagles to a program-best 24-2 overall record and the program's first NAIA National Championship.
