DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle softball team played a pair of 2-1 games against visiting Madonna, dropping the first game before winning the second game of the afternoon. The Eagles move to 4-4 on the year while the Crusaders now stand at 3-3.

Game 1 – MU 2, ERAU 1

Dee Espinosa opened the scoring in the first game, launching the fifth pitch she saw off of the scoreboard in left field for a leadoff home run, the first home run of the season for the Eagles. Unfortunately for Embry-Riddle, that would be the only run of the game for ERAU.

Robi Zimmerman pitched out of trouble in the first two innings, stranding a pair of Crusaders in each inning. But in the third, Madonna got on the board with a two-out RBI single from Nicole Salloum, tying the game at 1-1.

Salloum drove in the other run for the Crusaders, bringing home Emma Cook with an RBI groundout to give Madonna a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning, which would prove to be the final score.

Espinosa finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Talia Barraco, Haleigh Lewis and Zimmerman all went 1-for-3.

Zimmerman took the loss, falling to 2-2. The sophomore threw all seven innings for her third complete game of the year, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits, walking three and striking out three.

Caitlyn Keuvelaar went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored for Madonna, while Salloum was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Bree Crampton got the win, improving to 3-1. Crampton pitched all seven innings, allowing one run on six hits, striking out seven with no walks and one hit batter.

Game 2 – ERAU 2, MU 1

The second game started out as a pitchers' duel with neither team denting the scoreboard until the bottom of the third. Espinosa came through again for the Eagles, doubling home Alex Wood with the first run of the game, putting ERAU up 1-0 through three innings.

Keuvelaar hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Cook, who led off the fourth with a triple, to tie the game at one.

The score remained tied until the fifth, when Sarah Huey delivered a two-out RBI double, scoring Espinosa to put the home team ahead, 2-1, which would end up as the final score.

Espinosa was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with a double, run scored and RBI. Huey was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Wood was 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored.

Alexis Estrada got the win to even her mark at 2-2, pitching all seven innings. The senior allowed one run on just four hits, walking none and striking out two.

Cook went 1-for-3 with a triple and run scored for the Crusaders, while Erin Combs and Abrianna DeBono each went 1-for-2.

Combs took the loss, falling to 0-2 on the season. Combs pitched all six innings, giving up a pair of runs on seven hits, striking out one and walking none.

The Eagles return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host William Penn in a doubleheader at the ERAU Softball Stadium. First pitch for game one is set for 3 p.m.
