Robi Zimmerman threw the first one-hitter in program history in the game two victory on Saturday
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Robi Zimmerman threw the first one-hitter in Embry-Riddle softball history on Saturday, leading the Eagles to a 5-0 win in the second game of a doubleheader against Thomas. The shutout victory salvaged a doubleheader split for the Blue and Gold after the Night Hawks took the first game, 10-0 in five innings.
The results move ERAU's record to 19-14 on the year and 8-2 in conference play, while TU now stands at 16-17 and 2-2 in league action.
Game 1 - TU 10, ERAU 0 (5 inn.)
Thomas jumped all over the Eagles early in the first game and never looked back. The Night Hawks sent 10 batters to the plate in the second inning, scoring seven runs on five hits including a three-run triple from Brittney Mayhill and a two-run home run from Aimee Johnson.
TU added three more runs in the fourth inning on a two-run double off the bat of Johnson, who then scored on an errant throw from Haleigh Lewis to make it 10-0.
The Eagles couldn't solve Ashley Sikes, who set down nine of the last 10 batters she faced in pitching a five-inning complete game shutout.
Zimmerman (7-9) took the loss in the game, allowing six runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of work, walking one, hitting two batters and striking out two.
Dee Espinosa was 1-for-2 with a double, the lone extra-base hit of the game for ERAU, while Sarah Huey, Samantha Smith and Lewis all finished 1-for-2.
Sikes (6-3) earned the win, allowing four hits and no walks with three strikeouts in the complete game shutout.
Johnson was 2-for-3 with a triple, home run, two runs scored and four RBIs, while Mayhill was 1-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and three RBIs.
Game 2 - ERAU 5, TU 0
The Eagles got off to a much better start in game two, sending eight batters to the plate in the first, scoring twice. Smith reached on an infield single with the bases loaded that scored Huey, and Lewis followed with a base hit the scored Ariel Brayer to make it 2-0 after one inning of play.
Zimmerman didn't allow a hit until Summer Rose led off the fifth inning with a single through the left side of the infield, which would prove to be the only Night Hawk hit of the game.
In the bottom of the fifth, Smith laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached base on a two-base error committed by the third baseman, who threw the ball over the first baseman's head. Zimmerman was able to score from second base on the play, making it 3-0 Eagles. Lewis then hit a ball that was booted by the third baseman and ended up in left field, allowing Talia Barraco to score. Lewis was thrown out trying to reach second base, but on the throw to second, Smith alertly scampered home for the fifth Eagle run of the game.
Zimmerman (8-9) was masterful, allowing just six base runners in the contest, only one of which reached via a hit. She walked three, hit one batter and one batter reached on an error. Only once did a Night Hawk runner reach second base, which came with one out in the seventh inning.
Smith was 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI while Lewis was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Huey finished 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored.
Rose (7-6) took the loss, giving up five runs (one earned) on four hits, walking four and striking out none. She was also the only Night Hawk to pick up a hit, finishing the game 1-for-2 with a walk.
The Eagles are back at it tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader against No. 15 South Carolina Beaufort beginning at 1 p.m. at the ERAU Softball Stadium.
